Insurance, DVC, and "sudden" death?

We have our first DVC trip planned for July. My father was just diagnosed with terminal cancer. I read some of the threads about insurance for our trip, but I couldn't find the answer to our specific situation. I haven't attempted to consult the actual insurance or DVC site. Dis friends are better sources of info!

We are driving so no worry about flights. We will be able to decide if we have to cancel in enough time to have points go into hold.

However, what if my father passes while we are away? Does insurance cover us to reimburse the points for if we have to leave. I read about preexisting conditions...does this qualify?

Sorry about your father. Will keep him and your family in my prayers.

You'll really need to check this out with the insurance company before you buy. In my experience, companies & policies tend to vary some on what is covered and what is excluded.

My father passed away while we in the middle of our vacation using DVC points. We didn't buy the trip insurance but Disney put our unused points into a holding account that we had to use by the end of our use year. It was some once a lifetime thing that they do.

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I'm so very sorry. Please know we're thinking about your family and keeping you in our prayers.

I am also sorry to hear this sad news. My family and I were just at Disney 3 weeks ago when we got the horrible news that our 52 year old family member passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. We did not have insurance on our DVC points, but the manager at our resort was wonderful (TJ) he helped us arrange an early moring check out (3AM) so we could catch flights back home and he refturned our unused points to us. Disney was wonderful during this ordeal as was Delta. A little ray of sunshine during very dark days.

Disney will usually make a 1 time exception to the rule.(s)
Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Unfortunately, this just happened to us last month. We met with my FIL's doctors the day we left for Disney and they were all very encouraging, so we decided to go. He had been in rehab for months from a broken hip and other complications, and the doctors were even talking about sending him home soon. As it happens, he passed away while we were gone, and we rushed back home. All I can say is that Disney was wonderful in the way that they helped us and treated us during this difficult time. They also credited our unused points back to our account, which is something we didn't ask for or expect.

My thoughts and prayers go out to your family. Hope everything works out.

I don't think anyone enswered your travel insurance questions. My understanding is that the DVC related travel insurance will pay you $5 per point if you need to cancel due a "covered event." The death of a close family member is usually a covered event, but not if it is due to a non-waived pre-existing condition. The most common way that a pre-existing condition is waived is if you purchase the travel insurance policy within a short period of time after booking your trip.

If you could cancel you current reservation and rebook it, then buy the insurance, the pre-eixisting condition waiver might kick in, but you want to read the exact language of the policy to make sure that would be the case before you go to the effort.

My thoughts are with you and your family at this difficult time. -- Suzanne
