Insulin Storage

Can any past cruisers on insulin let me know how they stored their insulin on board? I was thinking about the beverage cooler/mini-fridge thingy, but it sounds like they might not stay real cool. What options are there on-board for insulin storage?

I am also an insulin-dependent diabetic. I usually put my insulin in the cooler/fridge in the cabin. I'm also reminded all too often (and you will be too on this thread) that your insulin does NOT have to be refrigerated -- that it is fine for up to about a month without refrigeration. I still like to store in the fridge and the one in the cabin is just fine.

I'm a diabetic, but not insulin dependant. However, on our last cruise, there was the smallest chance that I might have been on insulin, so I checked into this. If you fill out the medical form, they have a real fridge that they will put in your room to replace the ice box if you have a medical reason for such a thing.

BTW...I agree about the cold thing. When I was pregnant I was on insulin and I always kept it in the fridge instead of out. I know it would last out, but I didn't have to use TOO much so I was always wary of going past that 1 month. Besides, they kept it cold at the pharmacy, so they must have known something.

The only thing about the real fridge they put in your room, is that it does NOT replace the other one. You have to put it on somewhere that takes up some valuable space -- I'd stick with the one they have in there. It's plenty cooling.

I did not know that! Since I ended up NOT being on insulin, I didn't need it so I never got it! I can't even imagine where you'd put another fridge! I jsut assumed they replaced it!

I have gone on 2 cruises with DCL and I am insulin dependant. You should fill out the medical form so that the ships Dr. will know of your condition, insulin dependant or not. They will provide you with a real refrig. and a sharps box if you need them. I get the sharps box but I just keep my storage supply of insulin in the cold insulated box in the room. I bring several frozen bottles of water in a soft sided cooler when I check in at the dock. I always bring extra insulin (Lantus and Humalog) in the event I may need more or loose something. If insulin is kept cold it can last for up to a year. I do not refrig. the insulin that I am currently injecting for that month. First it is painful to inject it when it is cold and second insulin will stay ok for a month at room temp.
