who would I have install a garage door opener? we moved into a house last year without an automatic one and it is driving me crazy. I have an electrician coming next week to look at some light fixtures, should I ask him about the garage door or is that not who I would use for that?

an electrcian will have to be involved. but will likely not installthe opener, for installation of an oipener, i reccomend a reputable company like overheaddoor, they are national, and do have representative in MA, do a google search, you'll find sevreal.

i say use them because there are several things that have to be jkust right, and a lot of safety regulations on overhead doors, and they will know what the codes arein your area.

You can look to whom you purchased it....

Or a garage door installer (the device we have just plugs in...so I don't know why specifically an electrician would be involved..no more than one is involved when we had our garbage disposal installed).

We had ours installed when we got a new door and they did it all at the same time (well one man--not a "they").

YMMV depending on local regulations--but look it up under garage doors in the phone book.

because they ussually pulg in on a very short cord for safety reasons, and if theres never been one there there may not be areceptical in thecieling for it, and i would rather have an experienecd electrician run that wire, than someone unqualified.

When your electrician shows up make sure there is a plug in the ceiling or you are able to run an extension cord to an outlet in your garage. Todays homes come with a plug in the ceiling near where the door opener will be so thats no problem. However, if you live in an older home there may be no plug. You might have the electrician install one if there is not one. Then I agree with Froggy, call a garage door company and have them instla one. If you have already purchased one from one of the big box retailers like Home Depot or Lowes then contact the store you bought it from and they will get an installer for you.

I did mine myself (with a little help from my mom when needed to hold it up for me) - but, I'm a real DIY type girl. If you aren't sure about it, I would have someone else do it for you. It is not hard per se, but not simple either.

A lot of steps are involved - assembling the unit, connecting it to the joists in the ceiling, hooking it up to the door, etc....Mine had the plug right next to the unit, so that was ready to go.

You could contact a handyman service. Many of them are franchises and screen their employees. I don't think installing a garage door opener is brain surgery if the door is already installed and balanced. I agree that if you need a circuit or outlet installed then you should request an electrician. A handyman service may have someone who can do both.

Oh--we had one before..so we were all set already.

Sometimes different professions are certified electrically for what they need to do...like the A/C guy or garbage disposal guy.

If a new outlet is required--absolutely call an electrician. I just missed that part in the post.

Another place to call would be a garage door repair place, they install and fix them as well. If there has been one there previously they aren't hard to install, just time consuming. If there hasn't been one, call the garage door repair place, they will be less expensive then an electrician and are qualified to install them (although if you don't have the outlet like others have said you might need both to come out).

I just had one installed today! Bought the unit at Sears and they supplied the local installer to put it in. Perfect! :thumbsup2

wow, thank you all so much! good info. will look to see if I have an outlet on the ceiling in the garage. love the DIS.
