Tiggerlovers thread was surprising to me with the many responses. I thought it would be interesting to see if there were indeed as many families out there that appeared to be in responding to her thread.

I hope I've given enough categories for voting.

Thanks,

Edited for further clarification.

Actually Renee' you might want to add a selection for people who have children with ADD who do not give their kids meds.

Also you might want to title the thread in such a way that people who do not have children with ADD will want to look in and vote.

RM! LOL!

Seriously...for any CBers not regulars on the Debate Board...any and all pro-Ritalin comments might be held against you.

None of the choices really fit for me, but my husband was diagnosed with ADHD in the 1970s. (Just preserving the continuity here. :D)

I only had one child. He was never diagnosed with ADD or ADHD and he was never on medication for anything other than antibiotics when he was ill.

Wow, this is the second thread inspired by me today! That has never happened before.

I can't vote because DS has yet to be diagnosed.

:bounce::wave::bounce:

Is there a point to this thread--other than to get statistics on how many DISer's have ADHD children?

tiggerlover - the 4th option would be correct for you, although you've started having some evaluations he has not be diagnosed.

Yep that is me. 11yodd has a repaired heart defect and the "meds" do speed up heart rate so I have choosen to not medicate. There is a slight risk with her taking the meds so I decided that it was not worth it.

Two kids, 8 and 6, neither with ADD/ADHD.

However there were times, especially when the were both very small, that DH asked if there was a Ritalin patch or drip that we could get for them.

I have to admit, the purpose of a poll like this piques my curiosity. I think a parent's decision to use/not use Ritalin is their own. We are all responsible for our own kids no one else's. The effectiveness of Ritalin has gone full circle, it's good, it's not good, it's good.....
I guess I feel that what any parent decides to do for their own child is no one's business but their own.
Just MHO.

I voted for 3 although my cousin who is diagnosed with ADD/ADHD is not on medication.

When I see ritalyn, I don't think of ADD/ADHD I think of it being used as for dogs with Hip displaysia.

My oldest nephew (almost 11 yo) and my youngest niece (almost 10 yo) are both ADhD. Both are on medication. I'm not sure if it's Ritalin or not. I'm almost positive my nephew takes Ritalin though.

Neither of my kids have been diagnosed with ADD or ADhD.

My best friend's ds is ADhD. He's supposed to start taking a new drug for it next month. I can't remember what he's on now (it's not Ritalin, Ritalin gave him migraines).

I have a friend whose son is 17, ADD and medicated. He's a bright, intelligent young man.....a delight to be with. He described being without ritalin as being unable to sort through different priorities and acting upon them.....almost a state of constant mental confusion.

He doesn't medicate in the summer and we're seeing a distinct improvement in his focussing abilities as he grows older. He can carry on more than one conversation at a time (which is a milestone). He's not jumpy or distracted. I don't know if the ritalin has helped him develope focus or if maturation plays a role.

I can't say whether medication is for everyone or for anyone. I can say, however, that it has worked wonders for him.

BTW....I have one son, not ADD and not medicated.

Two sons, diagnosed ADHD. They used to be on a low of dose ritalin (one regular, one SR). When each of them started going through puberty we found we were able to reduce the dosage and get them completely off meds. We also used a behaviour modification program that helped immensely (meds alone are NOT the answer). My husband is also ADHD, no meds.

I have two small children. DD is in kindergarten and so far she has not been diagnosed. However, I think she is fine and does not exhibit any of the symptoms.
