Inspired by the thread...

My parents picked out 2 boys names. Lucky them, they ended up with 2 girls. They wanted an Irish name and went with Kerrie after the county Kerry in Ireland. They changed the spelling to "ie" from "y" to make it look more feminine

I'm named after the plantation in Gone With The Wind and an elephant. Spelled like the elephant.;) Love my spelling, never met anyone (human) with the same spelling.

I am child number six. My two sisters were both named after my father's aunts but apparently my parents ran out of people to name after and my mother went with a name she just liked for me.

DD is named Ariel (thus I am the MerMom). Long before I ever got pregnant we went to a cookout and met a child with the name and my husband fell in love with it and decided that is what we would some day name our daughter. Since we were childless at the time, we had no idea Ariel was the name of The Little Mermaid. It's a good thing we had a girl, by the way, because we could never once agree on any boy names.

My name is DUH Robin... and my mom named me after a character on a soap opera, which one she never told me!

Everyone thinks I was named after the song Rockin' Robin  which was a BIG hit the year I was born. It was actually released AFTER I was born.

My father's middle name is Garfield, after the president, but people always ask him if he is named after the cartoon cat. :rolleyes1

Somone in my parents' high school class was named DeNae and my mom liked it, but didn't capitalize the N. My name was originally going to be Michelle, but it turned too popular after the Beatles song came out.

My middle name is after my mother and mu dad's aunt.

DDs' names were chosen by DH. We had a list of 10 girls and 10 boys names we liked, all were pretty popular and easy to spell. I let him choose from the list.

My dad's name is Frank, so mine is too. I was originally going to be Joseph, named after my mom's dad (his name was actually Giuseppe but that would not have looked right with my Polish last name) but they changed their mind at the last minute. I wish they hadn't.

My parents didn't know if I was going to be a girl or boy until I was born and I know that my name would have been Sarah had I came out a girl.

...you don't look like a 'Sarah'......;)

I was named after the movie - Heidi

I was supposed to be Heidi! My mom read the book when she was pregnant with me and fell in love with the name - but then right before I was born she read the book What Katy Did and she changed her mind, so I ended up being Katie. She spelled it with an IE instead of a Y, but my grandma always thought it sounded prettier with a Y so has spelt my name KATY my whole life :confused3

My middle name is Susan, which is my mom's name!

Nope. Just Mona. I had one teacher in Jr High that insisted it must be short for something and called me Monica. :confused3

Oh I HATE that!!! I had a teacher that COULD NOT understand that Katie wasn't short for Catherine or Katelyn or anything else - she insisted it was a nickname and put me in detention for lying! My dad marched down to the school with my birth certificate the next day!!! :rotfl:

I was named Melanie because by brother is named Michael, and my sister Marissa, so my mom continued with the trend of having all our names have an 'M' and 7 letters. So, I was either Melanie or Matthew. She started off with naming my brother Michael and then last minute read the name Marissa in a magazine at the hospital when she was in labor, and when she realized the coincidence with the names, it stuck! I do like my name and have only met one other Melanie in my life. But no one can ever spell my first name or my last name, which are both simple. Such is life.

When each of us were born, my parents and grandparents got together, wrote their favorite names on a piece of paper, and put it in a cup. Then my mom drew a slip of paper from the cup.

My name was my dad's choice...I'm named after an old girlfriend! :rotfl:

I have two sisters. One got her name through my paternal grandmother. She's named after grandmom's sister. My other sister's name is the same as my maternal grandmother. Maternal grandfather put that name in the cup.

I'm named after the plantation in Gone With The Wind

Your name is Twelve Oaks! :scared1: ;)

I was named for my grandfather, Nicholas, who passed away while my mom was pregnant with me. There was already a Nicole in my family, so I ended up with Nikki. People call me Nicole all the time and can't believe when I tell them it's just Nikki. It's kind of annoying but I like my name.

My grandparents owned a bakery and had a girl from Germany working for them. Her name was Lore. My mom liked it changed the spelling and I was named. My brothers have called me Sis since my teens.
I named my youngest daughter Beth, short and simple. I have had arguments with people who insist that isn't her name. She is always asked for her legal name and has a hard time with people not believing her. I never thought that would be so difficult. She was named for an aunt who died while I was expecting her. My aunt's name was Lizzette which is a variant of Elizabeth. I just thought that was too formal.

...my sister was named almost the same way....we are all "K" names and my sister was supposed to be a "K" too (Kirsten), but my dad's mother asked to name the baby after her, after she passed on, so her name is Judie [she was born 4 months after my grandmother passed away]...

I was named after the Kimberley Diamond Mines in South Africa because that is where my parents met. I am LY though not LEY.

I am named Faith because it was the only name my father could think of that couldn't be changed to a nickname (he hates nicknames). Then my younger brother couldn't say Faith; he called me Pake and I ended up with the nickname of Pakey, although my father has never called me that.

family lore has it that my mom was still under the influence of drugs(after a hard labor...not recreational drugs) so my grandma named me...Theresa

Oldest DD we played the alphabet game...4 rounds, 2 to come up with the first name, Cassidy and 2 to come up with her middle name, Cheyenne...MIL had the audacity to ask if that was because of where she was conceived...nope not conceived in WY. I got back at her when her favorite child gave birth to a Fioana right after Shrek (1 or 2...can't remember which one) came out and asked if she named after the movie....I got rightous indignation...even after it turns out she did name her after the movie. Cassidy would have been an Aidan...which she thinks is after the hawk in Quest for Camelot.:lmao:

Youngest DD was named by oldest....We gave Cassidy the middle name (KateLynn after the grandmas) and started going through the baby name book . We didn't know whether we were having a boy or girl but Cassidy knew she was getting a sister for her birthday. We got to Abigail and no farther as Cassidy said, in her best 3 and 1/2 year old voice, "My sister's name is Abigail." She barely went through the boys names "just in case" and the only name she didn't yuck is Brett(that was a :confused3 response)....so had Abi been a boy she would have been Brett Floyd.
