..."Popular or Unique for a baby name?" , I decided to start a thread talking about how you got your first name...my niece was named 'Madison' from the Movie Splash and I was named after the 50's actress Kim Novak (we all have "K" names).....soooo, how did YOU get your name??

I am Joy and my parents said they chose Joy because they were so happy to have me. Lame! :rotfl:

My mother had two sons already "Jack" and Kirk". For a boy's name, she wanted to continue the "k" at the end of the name. She was going through the line at the supermarket and there on the shelf was a box a cigars - "E R I K" was the brand name.

So I was named after a cheap box a cigars...

My name is Linda, a very common name then and now. But there was some thought involved. My grandmother's maiden name was Linde. My middle name is Jo. That came from my aunt Joanne, GM Josie, and GF Johnny. I guess all my dad's side got to contribute was my last name, which had changed with marriage, but ended up as my DS11's middle name.

My mother named me from the Top 10 girls names list that Social Security puts out.

...wow. I know that lots of parents choose a name out of one of those baby books, but a SS list?? That certainly is different....what were some of their OTHER options??

Not lame at all!! My good friend 30 years ago was named Joyce because her mom had her at age 40, and she was an unexpected Joy. I think it's sweet.:goodvibes

Yes, every year SS publishes a list of the most popular baby names. From the 70's it was:
Jennifer
Nicole
Melissa
Michelle
Amy
Stephanie
Kimberley

My mom loved the song Mona Lisa by Nat King Cole so I got stuck with the name Mona. I have never liked it.

Named my dd after Sid's, sister in Toy Story. My at the time 2 year old son said Hannah so cute. Loved the name. Actually wanted Anna but my hubby didn't like that name so Hannah it was.

Nurse at the time said oh haven't heard that name in a long time. She now has two other Hannah's in her class. :lmao:

....hmmmm, thinking about it, I did know a lot of girls (classmates, coworkers, etc.) that had those names...

I don't really think my name is lame - I just like to tease my parents. We are a very close family. :goodvibes

I do think my name is a bit of a funny curse though - you have to be a happy person when you are named "Joy", otherwise it would just be weird.

....is it short for 'Ramona'??? There was a girl named Ramona in my class and we called her Mona.....

Nope. Just Mona. I had one teacher in Jr High that insisted it must be short for something and called me Monica. :confused3

Nothing original here...I was named after both grandmothers! One passed away last year, and I'm the only one named after her; I think that's pretty neat. :cutie:

Don't you just hate it when a teacher does something like that? I was Linda Lou in grade school by a teacher, then I was Linder by one in jr high, then I was Kinda Amazing in high school. (last name Mayes)...:headache:
