Inspired by the "sanitize " thread.

Which is ultimately more harmful to your health

  • Overzealous disinfecting of your surroundings with chemicals

  • The germs left behind by less than zealous cleaning

I have been really amazed to see the lengths that folks go to sanitize their homes (let alone hotel rooms)

Which leads me to this question.......

I just think it can't be that good for you to breathe in the fumes from all the cleaning products.

I didn't read the other thread but I gotta go with the first choice.

I always heard the saying "you eat a peck of dirt before you die" so even if we sanitize everything we still in the end are eating some dirt.

Gosh what a ray of :sunny: I am huh!?!

I can't understand the whole "sanitize everything" state of mind. Even after a flu, I don't go around and sanitize my whole house (only stuff that was puked on, slept in or on.)

I'm not too worried about germs in my own home, but I do worry about what's out in the public. I hate touching door knobs, public telephones, shopping carts, ATM buttons, etc. I always wash my hands after touching things like that; I'd rather be safe than sorry.

I don't overly sanatize. I don't like to use chemicals, and my only domestic quality is that I live in a house. I do lysol after someone gets sick on soemthing, but not much else other than the usual cleaning.

On a personal level all those fumes leave me less than healthy, so I can't imagine what tons of those fumes are doing to our environment and overall health.
I'll take the germs. We have to build up the immunity somehow.

According to my son's pediatrician, oversanitizing so that a child is not exposed to germs makes their immune system unable to develop to its potential - when it encounters a germ, it doesn't know what to do. I believe him, I am definately not a clean freak, and my son is barely sick. My sister, on the other hand, sanitizes everything, and my niece, who is about the same age as my son, is sick all of the time.

My mom is an overzealous cleaner, and I've been sick constantly since I was little. I'm 19 and over the past 6 or 7 years have developed a lot of environmental allergies. I honestly feel right now like I'm discovering a new problem every day. My doctor says the rise in allergies has to do with our tendency to be clean freaks. I'm inclined to believe her.
My dad, on the other hand, grew up in a home that was clean, but not overly so. He now works in an environment with tons of germs (installing wastewater treatment systems). He honestly gets maybe 1 cold every 3 or 4 years. He was sick as a child, but now is healthier than anyone I know.

I don't even own a can of lysol.

I do and if you had the stinky kittens you would, too. They use the litterbox and I run for the Lysol. :rotfl: But that's all it's used for.

Actually, we do have a stinky puddy tat, but since we got the bird we can't spray anything downstairs. :crazy2: I miss my deodorizing sprays!
