I am curious about what others have for engagment rings. What type of metal? Size? Diamond?

I will be getting my ring soon... finally. The one I picked out on blue nile was just bought and I am sad... now I am looking for a new one.

I have a .80 round brilliant cut center stone set in platinum with two tapered bagettes on either side. Wedding ring was made to match with 2 tapered bagettes and one rectangle diamond in the center.

1.5 carat solitaire in the center, 3 bagettes on each side, total carat weight just under 2.25 set in platinum.

Picked it out myself, narrowed it down with DH to 3 of them, then he had the final decission.

Brandy

I've had five, four were 1 carat marquise, my fave and the last was a less than 1/2 carat round...not only did I not like the ring, didn't much care for the man attached to it... :p ... sold that one!

Mine is 14kt gold and the diamonds equal to 2.25 carats.I Love my ring.My middle diamond is marquis and the surrounding diamonds are round.

I actually have 2 engagments rings, from the same guy no less! The first ring: I was in college and we decided to get engaged in my junior year. That ring was custom-designed by me and the jeweler and is totally unique. It is a 1.5 carat oval sapphire with 12 channel-set diamonds on the sides, 2 rows of 3 on each side.
Well, with graduate school and other things, we finally set a date after about 4 years being engaged! DF (now DH) wanted to mark that occasion with another ring, so totally unbeknowst to me he got me another engagment ring, this one more of a traditional ring- it's a .80 carat oval diamond solitare.

Mine was a simple gold band with a 1/3 carat solitaire diamond.

Mine is a round, brilliant cut, .9 carat solitare with nothing else. Side note, the diamond that became my engagement ring used to be one of a set of diamond solitare earrings belonging to DH's grandmother (Grandma Jane died right after DH and I met). When DH asked his grandfather for the stone, his grandfather reset the other earring into a tie tack for himself. DD1's (5 yrs) middle name is Jayne after Grandma Jane. Grandma Jane's b-day was Dec 3; DD's b-day is Dec 7.

Mine is a simple solitaire on a gold band, 3/4s of a carat. DH screwed up and bought the wrong ring (actually, he went shopping the day before and didn't realize you need to order these things!) He promised to reset the ring for our 5-year wedding anniversary. :teeth:

Mine is a .60 carat round stone in a simple gold band. When DH and I were talking about rings, he kept telling me that he liked the oval cut, so I figured that's what I was getting. When I opened the box, I said to him "you got the wrong one" After he was done laughing, he told me that he got the right one...he was just trying to throw me off track!

We were very poor when we got engaged. My engagement ring is a 39 point solitaire set into yellow gold. I love it though :)

1.25 ct hearts and arrows cut round brilliant in a simple platinum setting.

Wedding band is a common prong set eternity band.

Mine is apparently sewer glitter at this point. We were redoing our kitchen last fall and within the space of an hour I laid tile, cleaned up, did dishes, did laundry and cleaned the kitchen sink. I sat down for a well deserved rest - and looked at my hand and saw that my diamond was gone!:( My sweet DH and DD searched the house over - but I'm pretty sure it's down a drain somewhere. Que sara, sara! I still have the wedding band - and the husband!:p

I'm sorry Debbie! I hope you find it.

Mine is 18 carat gold with an emerald cut emerald. I also have 3 small diamonds on each side. DH and I created it with help from a jeweler.

I was planning a July wedding and really expected an engagement ring for Christmas. I got a Polaroid camera (this was a long time ago) which was the SAME present he gave his mother. That wedding got canceled. Funny - he still calls me decades later. Boy am I glad I didn't marry him.

I have 2. The one my DH gave me is I think half a carat round stone 14 carat yellow gold with three diamonds on each side. I'm not the kind of girl who is into the whole ring thing. I didn't even want one! Mine is special to me because the stone is the same one my dad gave my mom.

My other one was given to me by my grandmother whom recently passed away. It was given to her by my grandpa whom she had been married to for 54 yrs. It is beautiful! It is a 3 carat round stone with bagettes on each side. It is white gold which is my favorite. DH had a wedding band made to match it and I wear it everyday.

I am actually a gemologist, and have done the retail and wholesale sales thing. There is a lot to a diamond that you can't see online. The cut of a stone can make all of the difference in the world. Even if it is an AGS000, it can have a thick girdle and look small. On Fancy shapes, there can be as much as a 60% deduction of price for a bad shape. (just a couple of examples) While I myself would never buy a $2000-$10000 item over the internet, I know of a few that have. Some have gotten good buys, some got royally ripped off. I advocate buyer beware.

-> No jewelry store will want to set the stone (most won't even size the ring) if it was bought online. Make sure the ring is set how you will want it when you buy online.
-> What is your recourse online vs. a local store? (what if the certificate doesn’t match the diamond?)
-> How quickly can you get a problem fixed? (Sizing)
Just a few more things…

I don't say you have to pay huge retail prices, but I would suggest a jewelry store that has been around a while, and an AGS store has to have certain standards to keep the membership.

On Diamonds, insist on a GIA grading report if it is over a carat. On round stones (Ideal cut ones) I also like AGS. AGS grades the cut in a more detailed manner and they try to maintain quality standards. I have issues with many of the grades given by most other labs, PM me if you want to know my feelings about a specific other lab, Sometimes the truth posted publicly can get you into trouble…

No to fracture filled. when your jeweler cleans the ring the filling can come out...not a happy moment. Also, if they do work on the ring the filling can expand and there have been times the diamonds have sort of exploded.

Again, I would find somebody (somewhat local) who will be there to take care of you. I would find somebody you have a good feeling about and can trust. For the little extra you MIGHT pay, you have someone to complain to....

PM me if you want any more help, sorry about the soapbox, I have just seen more than a few people being misrepresented to online.

Well we weren't poor when I chose a .50 diamondfor my engagement ring. I had a choice that included a 1 carat and a 2 carat. They looked to fake for me. I couldn't imagine walking around with something that looked so phony. That being said Dh just surprised me yesterday with an anniversary ring for my birthday. It has 11 diamonds that are almost .50 each! It is huge and yes looks unreal but I know it's real and I love it!! My how things change!
