Inspired by the popcorn ceiling thread, kitchen sinks . . .

A friend of mine's builder told them that he would never put a stainless steel kitchen sink in a $200,000+ house. Ours is porcelain over cast iron, and it cost extra. My mother-in-law, however, put two stainless steel sinks in her fabulous remodeled kitchen. Which do think of as being the better product?

I think my double stainless steel sink goes well with my popcorn celing in my 200k+ house.

sheesh...can't win here!

however - if we could have afforded to put in better counter - i would have done a one piece with a built in sink. we sunk our money into other things that are harder to replace - counters/sinks are easy.

personal taste
Stainless comes in many varuious grades of thickness from "builder cheap" to "Industrial grade"

Well, my 200,000+ home may have popcorn ceilings but at least I have a nice sink.......I have a granite sink. :cool1:

My Mom and Dad have a porcelain sink, it is beautiful but you have to be careful with heavy items....it will chip!!!!

B-I-L just built a new house in Indy and the builder never bothered to ask them about what sink they wanted. And with all the other decisions they didn't realize they hadn't been asked. So now they have a one piece countertop/sink ($$$$) that has a stainless steel sink! They hate it but there is no way to remove the sink without ruining the countertop. The lake house they're building will have a much better and more stylish sink built into the countertop.

I have a stainless steel sink (I think) and I hate it. It has like a tarnish look to it. After I scrub the sink, I rub it down with the cleaner that you would be on old silverware to clean it. They aren't attractive in my opinion and a pain to keep clean but I do live in a very cheaply made apartment.

I don't think it's up to the builder to decide. He doesn't have to live there. Ultimately doesn't he just want a happy customer at the end of the job that will recommend him?

I think these threads show us that there's a lot of different things that can be nice. I may have the "right" ceilings and sink, but the outside of my house is brick and vinyl. There are some towns near us that are prohibiting vinyl siding . . . :cool1:

My house is brick with vinyl siding eaves. What is wrong with vinyl siding? Just curious as I've never heard anything negative about vinyl siding. I live in a very nice upper middle class neighborhood and all of the house have vinyl siding for the eaves....less maintenance.

I have a stainless steel sink and I HATE it!! DH says we're getting Corian (sp?) countertops and sink soon. :cheer2:

Well, I don't think there's anything wrong with vinyl siding, but here's a link to the story from our newspaper. Apparently, some people think it drives property values down. http://www.charlotte.com/mld/charlotte/news/10888795.htm

tar heel-- the planners in Charlotte need to worry less about vinyl siding on starter homes and more about substandard public housing and low performing schools. I' sick of hearing about it on the news.

We have a stainless steel sink too and our house it not a 'starter home'-- although it does have vinyl siding. We plan on doing a remodel in about 5 years and I want to put in granite countertops and upgrade the sink.

I like my stainless steel sink......had one when we built and replaced with a new one recently. It looks just fine and I like it....that's all that counts.

When we remodeled our kitchen we wanted a huge double sink, with one side large enough to fit a cookied sheet flat into. The only thing big enough was stainless...it's technically a "utility" sink...it didn't even come in the highest grade of stainless, but we love it anyway because it's what we wanted.

Well, we have a former model home and the kitchen is an award winning kitchen. I have 2 separate sinks and they are both Kohler Professional stainless steel sinks (different styles, same brand). They definitely don't look bad, in fact they are beautiful sinks. One even has a pasta pot build into it. :cool1: Yeah, I'm bragging a little, but you should have seen my last kitchen! :scared1:

I'd love for whomever wrote that article to come to my neighborhood and call the 4,000+ square foot houses "starter" homes that have vinyl siding for the eaves along with brick, stone, and stucco. Funny, but my house has gone UP in value to the tune of $30K in less than 3 years.

That sounds NICE! You deserve to brag. ;)

Don't shoot the messenger, Weird Eyes. The reporter is only reporting what's happening in those cities. It's the planners in those cities that need to look at reality. Vinyl is being used in higher-priced homes all over the place here, too. This story really caught my eye b/c I thought Davidson was the only town in our region doing this kind of thing. In Davidson, there essentially is no starter housing.

When we built our house a stainless sink was included, I hate stainless not just sinks but appliances too. I got a porcelain sink, it is sky blue, and I love it. DH dropped a blender and chipped it, I called the company and they sent me a bottle of paint to fix it. It is a pretty good match.

I have stainless steel and don't mind it at all. I followed the directions on www.flylady.com to "shine my sink," and its beautiful until the next time that it fills up with dishes.
