I have a co-worker that has gone off the "tacky" deep end IMO. :rolleyes2

Her son is a senior in high school and wants to go to Australia with a group of his friends for a "senior trip". Great, fine....it sounds like a lot of fun. So what is the catch you say?!!!!

Weeeelllll.....this boy and his Mom thinks it is a good idea to ask every person in creation for "donations" for this trip! So far she has called every professional business in our area and asked for donations, she called all the local grocery stores and asked if they would donate food so she could have a "cook-out" and then charge per plate to collect money, and the very worst is......she was soliciting donations from our PATIENTS  (this was put to a stop).

I dunno....maybe I am just being cold but when did it become acceptable to "beg for donations" for a freakin SENIOR TRIP?!!! :sad2: I think the boy should get a job and work for his trip...or if his Mom is so opposed, maybe SHE should get a second job...sheesh. BTW- they have already raised over 3,000.

Anybody else think this is painfully tacky? :confused3

::yes::

I can't imagine asking patients for donations :sad2:

That is mind boggling!! I don't even know what to say... Did anyone actually donate?

Ummmm yeah....to the tune of over $3,000!! As soon as the doctor found out she was soliciting the patients...that ended abruptly and almost cost her a job. However, she still regales us with how much money she is able to get on Sundays at church... :sad2:

Josh's teacher nominated him for a chance to attend a conference in Washington DC this summer. He'd get to meet all these senators and go to leadership seminars. The "invitation" stated that it would ONLY cost $1,800, not counting airfare. My sil was here was here when the invite came in and suggested we do a fundraiser. My answer to that was an emphatic NO.
I believe for things like that, it's the parents' responsibility. It's only funny that my sil was here for that, because my other sil actually stood up in church and asked for donations so that niece could go to swim camp. :rolleyes2 So, needless to say, Josh will not be going to the conference. He understands and as he gets older, he'll be getting more opportunities like this and some of them won't be nearly as expensive. We're sending him to church camp and that's expensive enough!!

Would you please tell her that I'd like a trip to Walt Disney World and see if she can't raise some dough for me??????? ;)

Very tacky :sad2: . In our hospital, she would have been fired.

Sure...she probably puts her hand in real deep into that collection plate as it passes by. :confused3

I agree. If he wants to go so badly, work and earn it instead of looking for donations. Geez.

Ugh. That's just sickening that she has actually raised $3000. Who gives money like that? :confused3 I wonder if she's lying about that to make her "cause" look legit.

I think that is tacky. I would never dream to do that for my child's senior trip. I wouldn't even pay for it if he wanted to go, but would have him get a job to earn it. I am sorry, but if you want luxuries, you earn them, IMO.

She is the reason when I go to businesses asking for cookies or a similar donation for our celebration of the Week of the Young child I hear "I'm sorry we have reached our limited of charitable donations for this month, period, quarter...

Frustrating!!

I think one way she earned so much money is when she called the other places of business, she made sure to say WHO she was and WHO she worked for. Her employer is well known in this small town and respected....so I think she was including his name with hers to make people feel a sense of "obligation" to donate.

That is beyond tacky! OH MY! If he was going on a good will mission trip where they would be helping a small village build a school or install plumbing then MAYBE it would be ok to ask for sponsors but this kid isn't going there to help anyone except himself. OMG! I hate asking people to buy from our fundraiser at school so that we can buy playground equipment for the kids or supply paper & supplies for the classrooms. I guess when he goes to college or gets married she will ask for donations for that too?

If its not a school planned "trip" then its tacky.. if it was a special school trip or an "invited" trip then it is would be ok.. when i was in school a few friends got "invited"to go to Russia for the summer. they had a few group fundraisers and all but 1 kid got to go...............I have no problem with that kind of fundraiser but if a group of kids decided to go on vacation and had a fundraiser then i wouldnt donate.........

I would not ask for or give "donations" to any trip that is simply for fun or even for part of a child's education. However, if the child wanted to mow my lawn, weed my yard, or wash my car to earn money for his/her trip - I would give generously. I also go to group spaghetti feeds etc. where the kids are providing a meal, entertainment, etc.

The kids really need to work for all trips IMO - and a just for fun senior trip? Shame on them for asking. It makes me kind of ill to think that there may be kids going on band trips, etc. that won't get the support because people already gave to send this kid on vacation. I don't consider a vacation a legitimate fundraising event.

Although I have not signed my kids up for any of the travel opportunities they have been "nominated for", they will be going on school band trips, I'm sure. I'll just pay the money they can't EARN as part of their educational expenses. I consider that my job as a parent, not the job of my friends and neighbors.

Is she actually telling these people that the kid just wants to take a trip after graduation and they are still donating? There is a difference between a school organized senior trip and the whole "hiking through Europe after graduation" thing. Who is stupid enough to donate money for something like that for an 18 year old who could be working part time to earn his "get-away"?

If they want to donate money for a kid to take a trip they should send it to Make-A-Wish!

Yikes.. That is really bad..

Hmm can I go door to door and ask for people to donate to my disney fund?

LOL! Are you in Georgia? I know someone who did the exact same thing with her son.

I'm in a charity sorority that raises money for other charities like cancer research, foster care, homeless shelters, domestic violence programs, etc. One of our former sisters lives way beyond her means and has kids that are super-involved in music and tennis, etc. She actually took her son around to other chapters' meetings and they wanted money to send him on a Drum and Bugle Corp trip. Our chapter wasn't visited, but we were astonished when we heard from the chapters that were solicited. That was so improper, in my opinion, and tacky. We help people who are truly in need. When we reflected on it after a bit, this move was right in line with her personality and M.O. I'm so relieved she's gone from the organization.
