Inspired by the 80's thread...What was your first ever CD?

Well, my first music compilation came on vinyl.

I have no idea what my first CD or cassette was. I'm pretty sure my first album was the Partridge Family, when I was about 8, and I know my first 8-track tape was David Bowie.

I think it might have been Amy Grant "Heart in Motion". I had just had my oldest dd and she had that song "baby" which I loved. I would hold her and sing the song to her.

That was after college in 91 because I did not have a CD player until after I graduated.

Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon was the first CD I bought. I think hubby's first was Boston, the one with Amanda on it. We bought them at the same time.

First vinyl album was Queen, The Game.
(Geoff I have that Brothers in Arms in vinyl, still. That was a great album.)
8-track, I never had one but my brother did. I bought him Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band 9 Tonight on 8-track for Christmas one year.

First cassette would probably have been Prince, 1999 or Controversy.

The first CD my family owned was one of George Winston's--I can't remember which one though--it was the one and only thing they had in that was recorded on CD the day we bought the player.

The first CD which was MINE was probably George Michael's Faith. I am pretty sure i had that only on CD (I often wanted cassettes so I could listen to them on my walkman) and it would not have been a family CD--my parents were not fans of his (but did like much of "my" music--so between that and Dad being able to get many things for free we had a lot of good stuff around the house).

I don't remember EVER buying a cd in the 80s because I worked in radio and got them all for free. I do remember my program director bringing in the first cd player and all of us gathering around to see this "laser" play a record...

Strange. My dad was a DJ but, in his market, the stations did not upgrade the equipment to CDs for the first 3-5 years. It was just too costly to be worthwhile until the price of both the systems and the CDs themselves came down--no one was sending stations OLD stuff on CDso they had to upgrade all of that when they switched over of course.

It was the part where you said you did not buy any because you got them all for free whic threw me. Early on there were not many demos coming out on CD either. I am guessing then you just didn't upgrade until radio did My dad, on the other hand, was so darned excited about the sound quality that he had one as soon as he could blow the money on it (it is the ONE thing I recall him ever spending on without regard to price in my lifetime).

The great thing about being a DJ's daughter was I had all the good music before anyone else even heard it. I had so many times when I played something I loved for a friend and they had no idea what it was and kind of thought I was odd and a month later it was THE hit and everyone wanted to hear it because they knew I'd already have it. Fun times. I do miss my dad coming home with new things he loved all excited to share them.

Pink Floyd, Dark Side of the Moon was the first CD I bought.

Dark Side was in my first 10 purchased. Others in that group included:
Under a Blood Red Sky - U2
War - U2
Stop Making Sense - The Talking Heads

I have two of those in vinyl still. The U2 ones. I refuse to give up my vinyl.

I think we still have most of the first 10 we bought.

38 Special--he picked that out
Heart--not a clue, he was the Heart junkie.

The Wall has been replaced probably three times now because of people "borrowing" it. Same with the double live Eagles disc, that was one of the first bought also.

What I would do is ask my music director to give me a tape of songs I liked which is the main reason I never bought music. When I moved south to Atlanta and cds were the norm, my office was right next door to the music room and I could go "shopping" for whatever demo I wanted. Alse we had music automation by the 90s and that stopped me from buying any music PERIOD!

I was lucky and had a friend who was a techy gadget freak and was able to get a CD player when they first came out....around 1985-86....and was able to get CD's because I worked at Wherehouse Records....remember them? hahah....

I can't remember the first...but U2 Joshua Tree was one of them....it was hard to get any indie or punk music (which I liked at the time) so had to go for mainstream...oh I think REM maybe....

We got our first CD player when my parents bought their first house in 1985. We moved in around the end of October, and the very first CD we got was a Christmas music collection. We were so impressed that we decided to take a CD to the white elephant gift exchange that Christmas. Unfortunately nobody wanted it, because nobody in the family had a CD player yet!

I got a stereo with a CD player in my room in 1987, and my first CD was INXS, Kick. My first vinyl was either the Annie soundtrack or Thriller (got them around the same time). I have no idea what my first cassette was, oddly enough.

8 CD box set of Pink Floyd so I now had Animals, Meddle, A Saucerful of Secrets, another Wish You Were Here and DSOTM, Obscured by Clouds, and another copy of The Wall.
Then I bought a 10 CD box set of Zepplin, which contains every one of their albums.

Ummmm.... yeah, I like Pink Floyd and Zepplin.

The first thing I learned how to play on the guitar is Pink Floyd Shine on You Crazy Diamond acoustically, then on the electric, then Coming Back to Life, then Money, then Time.......

To tell you the truth, I don't have an mp3 player, but I just got a radio in the car that can play mp3 on CD. As I typed this, I was burning a label on a Lightscribe CD to convert all my Floyd collection over to mp3 and burn onto the CD.

This thread is making me feel old! I don't remember the first CD I ever bought, but I do remember the first 45s with grown-up songs (not Sesame Street or similar) that my Dad bought me: Kool and the Gang "Celebrate" and Diana Ross "I'm Coming Out." That was quite a while ago!
