Taterbug's thread about active seniors reminded me of some of the stories my DD (17) brings home from the Assisted Living Facility where she works in the dining room.
She said most of the seniors always sit in the same spot, everyday, in the dining room. One day Mr. Bachman, who is 101 yrs young, came in and a new resident was sitting at "his" table. My DD said he just stood there, looking so very lost, and sheepishly said, "Where will I sit now?" MY DD felt so sorry for him. She escorted him to another table, assuring him that it was a new person and they didn't "know".
She also told us about this group of ladies who are very "demanding" and insist on getting "extra" of everything. One lady wants lots of whipped cream on her desserts and says to my DD, "you know how I like it". So, one time DD and her co-worker really piled on the whipped cream and for a second thought they might have overdone it. Well, this lady was overjoyed and said "I knew you would come through for me"!
One more -- DD has one senior who is very cranky and ornery. Never has a nice word for anyone. My DD remembered that he like to have his tomato juice first thing with every meal and she brought it to him before he asked for it. He said "Now that deserves an extra big tip"!
It's too bad, though, that they aren't allowed to accept tips ... but it felt good that he said something nice (for him).
