...just buy the bride a gift and not have to attend a shower party?

I would.

Shower parties I've been to recently go like this:

Young chicks that are BFF's of the bride all hang out in their little clique, while the rest of us old broads sit at a far off table, drink crummy wine punch, force some boring small talk and wait to "ooh" and "aah" at the blenders and shiskabob skewers.

Yes - buying a gift without the benefit of a swinging party invitation would do me just fine.

Seriously, it depends on the shower. I haven't been to a fun shower lately, but they used to be fun when they were more personal.

I've always been a fan of the less fancy weddings too - I hope DD gets married in the church and has a reception in the church hall with rigatonis, a cheesy band playing Sinatra songs, and a big old cookie table!!

No. If I didn't want to go, I wouldn't be sending a gift either. Fortunately here showers are for close friends.
