do you pull into your driveway (headlights first), or back into it (tail-lights first)?

And when I say "main road"...I mean a road with more traffic then a side street.

I was driving home the other day...and I was on this main road (defeintly not what you would classify as a 'side street'). I'm driving behind this pickup truck. All of a sudden, he brakes (no turn signal was used by the way) and starts backing up and into a driveway.

coming thisclose to hitting my car...cause I had NO IDEA what the heck he was doing.

he wasn't even "hugging the curb"...he was closer to the double yellow line in the middle of the road then anything...and just starts backing up.

Yes, I told him he was "number 1"...when he gave me the "what?" face after I honked at him...

I dunno - what's the best way to do this? signal? pull into your driveway headlights first? wait until there is less traffic to pull in?

I'm just so confused as to what he did! heheh

Well, here in the UK the Highway Code states:

"Do not reverse from a side road into a main road. When using a driveway, reverse in and drive out if you can."

This definitely makes sense from a safety perspective - it's almost impossible to spot oncoming traffic (until it's potentially too late) if you reverse out from a driveway.

Of course the driver of the pickup truck should have signalled to make his intentions clear - I think you had every right to be cheesed off as you wouldn't expect someone to start reversing all of a sudden for no reason!

So, in my opinion: reverse into driveways but always signal beforehand to avoid confusion. :)

Well, I have to say that backing out onto a busy road sounds scary, so I can't blame him for preferring to back in, but there must be a better what to signal his intentions. ;)

nope, I totally agree...i live on a main road too...fortunately, I have a turn around near my garage, so I always pull in forward and pull out forward.

Even DH yells at me when I 'back out' of parking spaces...saying pullign out is safer.

ok - I just wanted to be sure that this random truck backing up on a main road was probably not the smartest thing he shoudl have done!

Ditto!

BTW, you couldn't make me live in a house on a busy road, even if the house was FREE, and for this very reason! Between noise from the road and the hassle trying to get in/out of my own driveway, it's just not worth it!
