DD (almost 15) has been babysitting for 3 kids...7, 5, and 3...3 days a week, since last fall; she's become very much a part of their family...they take her to the beach/other events to watch the kids, and are considering taking her to Aruba next February to do the same (I think I should go to help too :) ). This weekend, they're moving out of state, but about 20 minutes away (we're all heartbroken. :( ) and she won't have a babysitting job much anymore...maybe occasionally on a weekend here and there.

She wants to give them going away gifts. I recently cleaned out the garage and came across 2 BRAND NEW, in the box, Razor Extreme scooters that we never returned to Sharper Image (long story...they kept sending the wrong color...I'm not even sure we paid for the "errors"!). I was all set to just donate them to Salvation Army (just don't want to bother selling them), and DD asked if she could give them to the two older kids. Great! I'll be glad to get rid of them, and the kids will love them and be able to use them at their new house.

Today, DD bought a child version of a scooter for the 3 year old...$40. DD was able to spend $40, because the other "gifts" are basically free.

The "problem" is...I think the gifts seem WAY too expensive, particularly coming from a 14 year old. Should DD tell them "the story"? Is that tacky?? I'm afraid they'll feel awkward about getting such expensive gifts from her. (The original cost was something around $80 - $100 each.)

Could they be from her and also your family? I probably wouldn't tell them that they were rejected items. That might send the wrong message.

Even though they are expensive gifts, the family seems to be very special and generous to her. I'm not sure that I would think that was out of place, under the circumstances.

BTW, kudos to you on raising a responsible and thoughtful DD!

You know, I wouldn't say a word. I'd just give them the gifts. How sweet!
