Kaos was asking for ideas for an April Fools joke for one of her friends. It got me to thinking about two practical jokes that I helped to pull off with great success.

One was on April Fool's Day. My Network Administrator wrote a program to make it look like a problem occurred with our host computer that caused it to delete everyone's user id's and home directories from the network. I set it up in our Deposit Operations Manager's primary access menu so when she selected to go into the archived reports, she launched this program instead of the report viewer. I made sure that I was scarce when she would have been getting ready to launch it, and our NA made sure he wasn't in the building. I got our Comptroller involved. He called her to find out if she knew where I was because he couldn't get on the network. She told him that she thought something very bad had happened. The beauty of this joke was that she hit something on her keyboard before the "April Fool's" message came across her screen. When I went back to my office, I made sure that I slammed the door so she'd know that I was back. She came into the office and the NA called me. I was reiterating what she was telling me to him. He was dying with laughter on the other side of the line. I told him I was going to go to her office to see what the problem is. This time we let the program run until it gave her the message. She didn't talk to us for a couple of days after that. Now, she laughs about it with us.

Another practical joke that I helped pull off was on my best friend's DH when he was a cadet at West Point. We knew that we were going to go to the Army/Navy game that year with him, so mid-November, we started sending him ransom-type notes.... cutout from magazines and glued onto index cards. The first one that we sent had his return address, but our friend's address on it, with no stamp. It was sent back to the sender for no postage. He thought it was our friend sending them. Every other one was sent with no return address and addressed to him. He was getting more and more worked up over this. We sent one that said, "Navy Men wear nicer uniforms." Most said, "Go Navy, Beat Army." By the time he picked us up to go to Philadelphia for the game, we had Navy bumper stickers to scotch tape to his bumper. He went in to the bathroom, and we taped them onto his car. Then, he almost ruined it. He said that he needed gas and to check his tire pressure. I told him that since he was driving, I'd pump the gas and check the tires. Conveniently, his DW lost the turnpike ticket in the car. We pulled through the toll booth to find the ticket. When he went back to pay, he saw the bumper sticker and ripped it off. On the ride down, he kept wondering out loud how so many people knew he was in the army because so many people were beeping as the passed us and showing us the "Number 1" symbol. He figured it out that it was the Navy bumper sticker.

We went to Wendy's for dinner that night in Philadelphia and a bunch of Midshipmen came in. That's when we told him that we had been sending the notes to him. He was embarassed that he fell for everything so readily.

They are the two best practical jokes that I've ever played on anyone.
