Seven. We had a full slate -- senator, congress, county commissioners, school board, state legislature, lots of judges -- so that isn't many. Exactly one Democrat won in my county -- the incumbent sheriff. Three of my victors were in the nonpartisan school board race. The other three were Republicans: a decent and effective district court judge, a fairly progressive and effective state senator and a county commissioner who wins every other time (In between the Republicans oust her in the primary. She gives the other commissioners fits by not always going along with them, so having her on the board is helpful. Plus, the Democrats only managed to muster two candidates for the three seats.)
I'm trying to be philosophical about this election. While Mrs. Dole hasn't actually lived in North Carolina in almost half a century and will undoubtedly block vote with the Republican majority, I'm sure that she will represent me better than Jesse Helms did. And my congressman, a nice man who is totally wrong on the issues, has to run again in two years!
