I am just so tickled that FloridaFam & her DH woke up this morning...no kitty, no real plans to get kitty, and now have adopted an abandoned kitty and taken her to the vet and are in love, all in this economy.

That is just the best story. :)

Has anyone else ever been adopted?? LOL. Usually we adopt, not the other way around, but in 2004 a mangy orange stray showed up, near death. DH had a no-feed stray policy due to a jealous indoor cat who sprayed. But this one looked so bad we broke policy. We were sure he would be dead the next day...

Five years (this month!) and a few operations later (neutering, a facial abscess, major tooth cleaning and pullage), he is a lean, mean, loving machine.

We did not need or want another cat. He wanted us, though. Anyone else??

Yes! We had one cat -- Lavender. No intention to take in any more.

Then a really affectionate kitty started showing up in our yard. We tried to ignore it at first. My husband put it in the car and took it over to some nearby apartments, assuming it belonged there. But it kept coming back to us. We called the humane society and they said that if they took it from us, chances are it would be put to sleep due to the high cat population in our area. The cat population has exploded in our town this year, due to last year's flooding. They estimate 25,000 stray cats in our town, living in cat colonies!!!!

Anyway, we kept it. And turns out the reason it was so friendly was because it was PREGNANT. It had two babies, (one via c-section), and now we have four cats. They are all super-sweet and happy as can be. But NO MORE CATS FOR US!!!!

Here are the kitties. Violet & Poe

Cali was starving to death when she adopted us 10 years ago. She wanted to come to WDW with us as you can see.

That's how I got conned into my first cat. My neighbor, relative, that lived two doors down had some kittens. I went over to talk and she had the kittens out. I had no plans on bringing any home. Well, all the kittens were running around the back yard with us. There was one that instead of playing around the yard, or with the other cats, it stayed with me. It played with the shadow of my hair in the grass, it didn't leave me the entire time I was there. Well, I brought her home.

There was another one. One of the dogs I have now. My maxie was getting old and I thought she could use a playmate. Well, she's a lab or golden mix, so that is what I was looking for. I found one and went to a shelter out of town to see her. She was in the cage sleeping and this other dog kept looking at me. I took her out and held her in my arms, she laid there like she had no intention of ever moving, and fell asleep. I tried to lay her down back in her cage and she didn't want to leave me. So, I brought two dogs home that day. Remind me to only get one dog at a time. Anyway, my maxie? The dog that played momma to every creature I brought in the house? She was mad for days. She would lay in the kitchen facing away from me. She never laid in the kitchen, and she never laid anywhere not facing my direction. She got over it, but she never really made friends with them.

We had two, and that was my limit. Walked into the pet store, and they were doing an adoption event. I had always wanted ( and made the mistake of telling DD ) I wanted a calico kitten. Of course, they had one, who was not the most attractive kitten. She had the biggest ears and eyes you have ever seen on a cat. DD asked to hold her, and they didn't think we could because she had been playing with the other cats in her cage. The woman took her out and handed her to DD, and she promptly curled up on her arm and went to sleep.

We took her home. :lovestruc The girl who fostered her had her mother bring her lunch, and when she found out we adopted her, she burst into tears. I started crying too, as did some other woman who was looking at the kittens. We were all a mess.

She is the sweetest cat I have ever had, even with her big ears and eyes.

Yes. On my 32nd birthday, an orange adolescent-aged kitty was waiting for me in the parking lot of the restaurant where I ate my birthday dinner. I had been wanting a cat anyway, so we took him home, advertised in the paper and no one claimed him, and we still have him 20 1/2 years later.:goodvibes I always say he was a gift from the universe on my 32nd birthday.

My calico Marble was going door-to-door in our apartment complex crying at every door. She was so skinny it was a wonder she could even walk. We started with wet food but before she would eat she wanted to be pet. Only after getting some petting would she eat. She really is an ugly cat. A chunk of her ear and an eye are missing but she follows me around all day. A perfect and now fat lap cat.

Our three youngest cats (two of whom normally live with me) have adopted us.

My dad was walking our dachshund Schnitzel in our neighborhood when a kitten came up to him. He jogs five miles around the neighborhood every day, so he knows all the animals and knew she was a stray. She allowed him to pick her up and carry her half a mile on his hip while Schnitzel was going nuts. When he got home he draped her around his neck and told my mom he brought road kill home for supper. She allowed this. Eowyn has lived with us since 2002 and is one of "my" cats that normally lives with me.

I was eating at an ice cream shop in town with my roommate. We were on the patio when the skinniest little cat you have ever seen jumped on my lap and started purring. He lived in our on campus apartment for two weeks until the next time I went home (no pets allowed in campus housing). Makya ended up becoming Eowyn's "boyfriend" and is my other cat that normally lives with me. He is definitely not skinny anymore!

Our third cat, Salem, came up to my mom when she had Schnitzel outside and tried to follow her into my house. My dad called me between parades (I was working at Disney) and told me. I remonstrated with him for leaving the poor defenseless kitty out there all alone. Next day. same thing happened.
When my dad told my mom what I said she went outside and brought him in. They sent me a picture on my cell phone telling me not to get attached. I named him Salem and he still lives with us. (This is in addition to Ailaina and Charity who came from the shelter).

This is Makya and Eowyn. Makya is the black and white cat.

We were cat sitting a friends pregnant cat for a couple weeks. She was not a friendly cat and she definitely liked my DH better than she liked me. So, I should have known something was up when one morning she hops up in my lap and lays down. She was purring up a storm or so I thought. It took me a couple minutes to realize that she was in labor. I didn't want to risk hurting the kitten, so I waited until she birthed the first one before I moved her off my lap(I had a blanket covering me). She ended up having 6 kittens. I had no intentions of getting another cat. But once Kycha was born on my lap, I couldn't imagine not keeping her.

A couple years later, we bought our first home. We didn't have rules to abide by anymore so we could have as many pets as we wanted. We wanted a dog so off we went to the local Humane League. To get to the dog section of the pound, we had to walk through the cat section. It was a narrow hallway with cages on either side of the hall. So as you walk through, you are walking really close to the cages. As I'm walking through, suddenly this little paw reaches out and grabs ahold of my arm. I stop dead in my tracks. It's this gorgeous kitten with blue(gray) fur. All thought of getting a dog went right out of my head. Katie came home with us that day and she is the sweetest cat I have ever had.

Yes. She wormed her way in, ripped up anything with lace, killed the other pet so she'd be the only one and now nobody can sit in the middle of the couch because she'll paw at them and headbutt them until they move out of her spot. :sad2:

I used to be in charge of the house. But now - make no mistake - Kitty rules.

We had two indoor/outdoor cats (spayed/neutered). A couple of years after we got them, my mom was calling them in, and this little mangy-looking calico kitten showed up instead. Prior to these cats, we'd had up to eight at a time; my mom was NOT interested in more than two... but this kitten wouldn't stay away. Few days later, it was pouring out - and she caved :teeth:

I posted about it when it happened, but I was adopted by a giant bunny rabbit almost 2 years ago.

I woke up one morning, very early, when the weather was warm, to walk the dogs. I have a fenced-in back yard so I simply let them out and wait for them to do their business. It was still dark and I was wearing nothing but a T-shirt when I realized that my German Shepherd was in hot pursuit of a giant black blob. They zoomed back and forth across the yard while the black blob was screaming (I had never heard anything like it and I hope to never hear anything like it again...). I joined the pursuit (yes, in my bare feet and T-shirt) as did my little dog - we made quite a scene, I imagine!

My shepherd finally pinned the blob down against the fence and, obviously not knowing what to do once she caught it, I was able to intervene. The "blob" actually leapt into my arms and almost knocked me over. I couldn't even tell what it was! I walking inside and woke my husband up to ask him what I was holding and he only said, "the biggest (#)* rabbit I have ever seen."

We called all the shelters, knocked on every door, put up signs - no luck. I did have one lady who raised Pit Bulls who suddenly remembered that it was her rabbit (earlier in the day she had never owned a rabbit) and she insisted that we give the bunny to her. Ummm.. how about "NO?"

Today "Bunny" is sitting next to me, cuddling with my German Shepherd (and no, the dog isn't happy about it but she tolerates her quite well). I never thought I'd have a rabbit in my life, but she's been a more than welcome addition :lovestruc

Awww...that's so sweet! :goodvibes

We brought Autumn home one day last October. We were at my Mother in law's house and she asked if we had "seen her cat" DH looked confused because she doesn't really like cats. It appears that a young calico had shown up and she had been feeding it. She said she wasn't going to get her fixed or take her to the vet. DH said, "Do you want to bring her home" Oh yes, I do love that man!! Brought her home, got her fixed and she never looked outside again.

The other 2 cats were less than happy to see her at first, but they all get along now.

We've been adopted by 3 cats at 3 different times.

Barlow was the first to adopt us. We lived in a condo, and she came to our door and hung on the screen for an hour. She was barely weaned. We tried to give her away, but no one wanted her, so we kept her. She lieved with us for the next 11 years until she passed away.

Violet was the second. She was a survivor kitty, who had moved from house to house on our street as opportunity arose. She stayed around until we adopted 2 kittens, then she picked the family one street over who had a daughter who was bed-ridden. She lived out her days on the daughter's bed, with both family's blessings.

The most recent one is Spatz, who has now broken me of taking in cats. He was abandoned when a family moved away from across the street. He figured out how to get into our basement, and would come to the top of the basement steps meowing to get out. We finally agreed to adopt him, but he is so emotionally needy--he is incredibly attached to me, and is horrible to deal with after I have been away for a few days. He is probably the dumbest cat I've ever had dealings with, although he was smart enough to pick us to live with.

One very hot day while I was visiting at my parents house, a dog started walking past. My mother told me to get him and give him some water because he looked very thirsty. He decided to stay. After a few days and no luck finding an owner, she loaded him into her car and drove to the dog pound. She got all the way there and realized she couldn't leave him. She drove home with one very big dog who lived the remainder of his life in comfort and with lots of love and attention.

We've had 5 kitties adopt us over the years.
One is still with us at 14 years old.
At one time we had 5 cats, 3 of them adoptees.

Well I'm an animal shelter volunteer. When I first started, I never considered adopting a dog from there since I already had a dog. But then Jasper came in. He was a little silky terrier who had just gotten hit by a car and came in with a broken leg. Anytime I took him out, he was the friendliest little dog and all he wanted to do was run around (even with the broken leg in a cast), play and cuddle. I fell in love with him, and so did my sister who was visiting me at the shelter the one day. Soon enough, we just had to bring him home. It's now 3 years later, and we're so glad this happened. If I didn't volunteer at the shelter, he would have never been with us since we were never out actively looking for a dog.

That is how we got our latest Tinker Boo. He showed up on our doorstep. My DD was going to pick us up something to eat and when she went out to her car, there he was right near her car. She came back in and told my DH & I and we went out to see. DH went one way, I went the other and were able to get a hold of him. He is the sweetest of all the cats we have.

We kind of got our Angel the same way. She showed up at work and when I went home that evening, I told my DH and he said we should go and check on her. We went back to my work and she was still there and when I picked her up and took her to the car, she had no problem. She is now 4 years old and a beautiful looking Maine Coon cat. She was 6 weeks pregnant and very underweight when we found her. The vet aborted the kittens because she was too underweight and had worms. She told us that neither Angel or the kittens would have survived if she had carried to term.

Right now we have 4 cats and 1 dog and all but one are rescues.

I'm almost afraid to ask.........

Kitten adopted us back in 1988. She was a baby feral cat who happened to wander into the yard at the lumber yard my family owns. We fed her and she never left. My unimaginative family named her Kitten because, well, she was a kitten. Kitten lived with us at the lumber yard, as an outside kitty, for 20 years. It was so hard to accept her death and I still see her, out of the corner of my eye, sometimes at the lumber yard. I told my dad that we need a new lumber yard cat, but he doesn't agree, of course.

Kitty adopted us sometime in the early 90s. It turned out that she actually belonged to my neighbours, but for whatever reason, she decided that she wanted to live with us instead. We fed her tuna and a melted freezepop and she was content. My dad built her a little house to live in outside, and she had a crate to sleep in in the garage when the weather got bad, but she was really an outside kitty. After a few years, my parents decided that they didn't want Kitty anymore and gave her away to someone who tried to keep her inside; Kitty clawed her way out of their house and hasn't been seen since; I never forgave my parents for that. -_-

We've had Chloe now for almost four years, but we adopted her. Luckily, my parents are totally in love with this cat and I don't have to worry about them giving her away.
