I wonder if there's folks who get offended if an emergency tech does his job on the site of an accident, maybe at a vehicular accident on the highway?

It's not an issue of offense. It is one of comfort and consideration. Lots of people don't like seeing needles, injections and/or blood.

It's pretty easy to do a gluc without anyone noticing, but it would be hard to give yourself the shot without having someone be able to see it.

Out of consideration for others (as well as not wanting to be a spectacle), it's a good idea to give yourself the shot in a private place.

There are those who don't give a ratt's butt about other people's comfort and it takes all kinds of people to make up a society. But there are those who do.

I don't get why people are like that with needles. I don't get why people are like that with anything. I could eat lunch while watching surgery, but wouldn't suggest that people start doing surgery in the Olive Garden, KWIM?

I'm not one to be bothered by needles. I've always watched when they stick me for blood tests or vaccines. Now, donating blood, no, I don't really want to see that small pipe go in my arm. But I know plenty of folks who have issues with seeing them used on people, and it's usually easy enough for DH to just leave the room. Besides, doing it in a bathroom has an added benefit for him--the mirror. That way he's able to tuck his shirt back in properly.

Not really. I'm not diabetic but I am a nurse and I know I could easily give myself an injection in a public place like a restaurant or movie theater without anyone being aware of what I was doing.

I'm a nurse, too. And I think that in most situations it would be very difficult to give yourself a sub-q shot without anyone being able to see it.

I cannot watch anyone get a needle, even in movies when I know it isn't real. But never would I be offended or feel a diabetic should try to hide it because of the way I feel. They need to do it, then go right ahead I just wouldn't watch.

It's not.

I'm not diabetic but for quite a while I was giving myself hormone shots when I was trying to have a baby.

I could generally find a somewhat secluded corner, or, if in a restaurant, just kind of get everything out and do it under the table. I was known to do the shot right through my clothes, so no skin showed even.

For a while DH was taking Byetta. He used to carry the pen thing in hos pocket and just shoot himself right through his clothes with it too. No biggie.

DH does that sometimes, but once in a while there's a bit of blood and he doesn't want to get a stain on his shirt just before he leaves for the day.

I'm on 3 types of insulin. All of them are pre-filled pens thank goodness. They are so much easier and more discreet then the syringe and the little bottle. I usually do it in the restaurant b4 eating and have never really felt self conscious about it. One of my close friends gets squimish w/ needles so I usually warn her ahead of time. She is even getting used to it now.

As far as the bathroom goes....While using the syringes I would have the hardest time finding flat surfaces in those stalls not to mention they are not the most sterile environment. I just always figured the table at the restaurant was cleaner .

I guess I'm going to be the insensitive jerk here but...I worked with a man who was diabetic. He would discreetly test at the lunch table in the lounge. Then he would pull his shirt halfway up and give himself an injection - and there went my lunch. i was in no way shape or form offended; I just can't watch the needle thing.

Then one person spoke up and accused people of flaunting it and said that he doesn't us exposing his child to it.

I cannot imagine someone equating exposing your abdomen for an injection as "flaunting" . That makes it sound like he is doing shirtless dirty dancing or something! Or maybe waiting with a just a trench coat covering his hairy belly....just waiting to flash and forever scar innocent children !

Why would you give an obvious idiot any power over what you think?
