I was going to post about this anyway, but wasn't sure if it had any relevence. After reading Becka's post about the scale, I decided that there may be others who need to hear this.

It's not your friend. It's not your enemy.
IT'S A SCALE!

It is a hunk of man made (focus on the word MAN, and sorry in advance to John, Dan and any others who may innocently carry around that strangely mutated chromosome) equipment designed to tell you something about yourself that should be between you and your Doctor. Yet, somehow, we all develope some strange emotional attachment to it. It is nothing more than a tool. Don't rely on the wrong tool for the job! You don't flip pancakes with a wisk, you don't prune roses with a butter knife, you don't hammer nails with a screwdriver. Don't use the scale to give you a mental boost.

We have all been there. Step on the scale, show a loss, and we float on air for the rest of the day.:) We feel so good about ourselves. There seems to be a disproportionate reaction, however, when the scale shows no loss, or Heaven forbid, a gain.
There are so many reasons for gaining, despite everything we try to do to get rid of it.

The point is to continue to nourish yourself with foods that are not nutritionally deficient, and (this is usually the case with foods in this category) stay away fom salt. Continue to work activity into your daily life. If you want to feel good about yourself, be good to yourself. If you want a boost, get outside and smell the flowers. Feed the Birds. Do something nice for someone you love, or better yet, for someone who has no one to love. Tap into who you are, and DON'T let the scale tell you that. It is not going to tell you what a kind, generous, loving, compassionate, beautiful, selfless, etc., etc., etc., person you are. It is the wrong tool for the job.

About those clippies. I'm not giving mine back! You'll have to pry it from my wretched, rigid fingers! I did lose that weight, and though I gained some back, (I know I've been doing the same thing except I have been eating some salty foods and TOM is just around the corner, so it follows that I would be up.) I won't give up my clippie for that. However, I won't ask for another, until I re-lose, plus lose another 5. (not lose the same 5 over and over, though, even that could be a victory, in the sense I'm not really gaining anything either.;) )

Clippies, and the great people on this board are great tools and motivators! Clippies show you what you can do and, indeed, have done. People give you the help you need to stay on track and accomplish your task. Remember, next time you feel the need to weigh, ask yourself if you are prepared to do battle with this machine, and do you really want to use a butter knife to prune your roses? :D

Keep the Faith!

Standing ovation to you, Tracy!!! And by the way, I don't think you should give your clippie back either...you DID earn it after all! I look at my stupid scale everyday, and ponder...should I? I don't, and wait until my weigh in day. I have been funny about the clippie thing too, and as you will note, I still don't have one. I'm proud to be WISHer and all, but afraid I would get obsessed with it, like I have been known to get with that blankity blank scale!

I was suprised to see that I had inspired a post when I logged on this morning especially since the post was over 2 weeks old. :)

I just posted an update on the original thread. I am doing much better with the scale and I am not living or dying by it anymore.

Oh. Sorry. I guess I was right, and this isn't relevent.

Glad to see you're doing better!:)

I didn't mean to say that it is not relevent I was just trying to say that I was suprised to see it now because I had really forgotten about that post I had made.

When I first logged on I didn't see that post had been bumped up so I could not think of anything I would have recently said that would have inspired a post.

My comment was not meant to be mean-spirited or to make you think that your thread was not a good one. You made some excellent points that apply to all of us.

Tracy you made some wonderful points!!!! ANd it does us all good to be reminded of it from time to time!! Sometimes we all put to much into what the scale says. The most important thing is that you be true to yourself and to keep trying!!!

Thank you for the timely reminder Tracy!!!!

Becka,
THANKS!

To everybody else,
I know I tend to be preachy, but I do love all y'all, and want to help keep things in perspective. I know we are all here to lose weight, be healthy, and all that. I just want to make sure that we all keep true to who we are inside as well. Please forgive me if I seem to belittle why we are all here. It is not my intention. There are many levels of support that are needed in major life changes, and I don't know about you, but sometimes, I need to be told that there is more to me than my looks, 'cause face it, even at an IDEAL weight, I aint getting any younger or prettier! But I do have great value, even if I am lugging around extra weight. Sorry for the rant, and...

Keep the Faith!

Let me tell you about my scale obsession. I step on it first thing every morning. I won't weigh myself at any other time of the day.

I get very uptight if anybody touches the scale. In particular, my toddler likes to bounce on it. I'm convinced that this make it "weigh" me heavier. So now I hide it in a corner so nobody will touch it.

I can't get a new scale because I'm worried that will won't weigh me the same as this one. (i'm always 5 pounds heavier at the doctor's office)

I even have a ritual for how to get on the scale involving one foot at a time and moving as slowly as possible.

OK. So now you know that I'm a freak. I live and die by the scale.

Tracy, I love this post and all your posts! Keep on ranting, you have the most wonderful, down to earth observations. I look forward to your posts.

Linda

PADisMOM,

I'm a freak too. I have the same "ritual" for weighing and I panic if anybody bumps into my scale.:jester:

Linda,
I'm still laughing my butt off! (if only! :p ) Scale rituals are so funny. Guess what? I'm laughing because I totally relate! I just may laugh through lunch. Thanks for the giggle!

Keep the Faith!

Tracy! What a motivational post. Brava!! You are just a really special member of my support group, sweetie.

Becka, you don't have a meanspirited bone in your body. You were just surprised because you didn't realize someone had posted your old thread back to page one.

I'm really glad you are part of my support group, too :)

WISH is so helpful for me :)
