I can see one from where I am sitting. I think we have at least one more and a medical dictionary.

I have a son who takes one to two Philosophy classes a semester as part of his Poly Sci/Social Justice degree and he doesn't use a hardcover dictionary..

He's taking classes - I'm not.. LOL.. I'm sure that he would have less of a need for a dictionary in that case.. That was just one example - my range of reading is extremely wide (no - not just Amish - LOL) -so I do like to have a dictionary nearby.. I don't leave my computer on all day and I'm not interested in a Kindle or Nook.. Personal preferences..

Yup - that too - as well as one for medications, since I have so many issues with them..

Well I can see where if you're only reading one book a week - a mystery - you likely wouldn't need a dictionary..

For those of us who read anything and everything we can get our hands on - from ingredients on food labels to philosophical books on a very large scale - a hard cover dictionary tends to come in handy..

Actually I am surprised you have to look up so many words. My experience has been that the more one reads the bigger their vocabulary gets and the less need they have overall for a dictionary.

Doesn't happen often (I don't think I said "many"), but when I find myself developing an interest in something I had no interest in before, it happens..
Or I pick up a book containing subject matter I have never been exposed to before.. And of course medical terms are in a world of their own - LOL - although having worked in a doctors office and being interested in medicine since I was a child has left me with a fairly decent undertanding of the terms - except when they change them to something new.. And we won't even go down the road with prescription medications..

If there is a person out there in the world who knows the definition and spelling of every single word in the universe, I sure would like to meet them!
