Having just completed 4 weeks of helping out on the dining line phones, I noticed a few commonalities among callers. I thought that this might be helpful.

1- The CM on the dining line is not in control of availability. They want you to dine as close to your prefferred time as possible.
2- Since the dining system is a "live" system, updated in real time, and cancellations are dependant on independent individuals changing their plans, you might call 60 days out to find no availability at a certain location, and then 50 days out call again and find something more to your liking. This does not mean that the CM lied to you, it means that things changed. That happens.
3- Lets say you have a party of 8. If the CM sees a table for 8 available at the location/meal period requested, they will give you that one. If they see a combination of smaller tables that will accomodate 8 during said period/location, they will suggest it. If they say "I don't have any availability for a party of 8" it means that there is no way to physically squeeze 8 human beings into any combination of the tables available at a given seating time. "How about for 2 parties of 4?" is a silly question, because at the same time, there are not 8 seats available in that location. There may be room for 4 at 2 tables for 2 at 5pm and 4 at a table for 4 at 7pm, but why would you want that?.
If there is any possible way to put your entire group at one seating, it will be suggested.
4- When the CM asks how many people are in your party, they are asking for the total number of living human beings. This number is needed for fire code reasons, and has nothing to do with the cost of the meal. Figuring out the date 90 days from today and squeezing large parties in at multiple tables on short notice are enough tricky math problems for the CM to have to contemplate. Do them (and yourself) a favor, and give one solid, accurate number when asked.
"eight, please." takes far less time than "Two... and a fifteen year old, and 2 kids... and 3 who are staying off property." and in the time that it takes for the CM to wrestle with that addition (sifting through the things that don't matter at all) the last table for 8 on the major holiday at the one restaurant you MUST dine at, could disappear from the screen, making it seem as if the CM "wants your children to starve" (yes, that's precisely it... I get a bonus if your children starve...)
5- Know when and where you want to eat. There are nearly 200 places to nosh at WDW, and there is no way for a CM to search for "Whatever you have open for a party of 6."
6- ALL characters at character dining locations are subject to change without notice.
6b- Cinderella is the only princess scheduled to appear at Cinderella's Royal table. While other characters might appear from time to time, that is an unscheduled, surprise bonus. (I know I may catch heat for that statement, but after much research and speaking with the individuals responsible, I can tell you that it's the God's honest truth.)
7- There are no same-day bookings for CRT or PSB. Both of those locations count on a handfull of same-day cancellations, and book accordingly. The screen might show an open table the morning of, but the system will not book. There is no need to call for either of those locations the day of.
8- if you're staying at a disney hotel, just press the "dining" button on your in-room phone. Don't call on your cell phone. Same goes for in-the-parks: hit *88 on any WDW pay-phone. It's free, and the CM will spend far less time asking you to repeat yourself because your cell phone is coming-and-going.
9- Another note on cell phones: Don't call WDW-Dine while driving. It's dangerous, the CM will have a hard time understanding you, you won't be able to write your confirmation number, distracted driving can get you a ticket, and technically, the CM isn't even allowed to talk with you if you're driving (again, it's dangerous. If you think you don't drive poorly while using a cell phone, you're lying to yourself.)
10- Don't stress. You won't go hungry while you're here. Have a plan B, be realistic, if you can't get a certain location/time, you're no worse off than you were before you called.

Safari Steve, you are always a wealth of information, and I very much appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge with us! You poor thing...they stuck you on dining?!!! You have provided some great tips! Having just made PS for our upcoming January trip, I do have to say that I am always amazed when I make my PS that there is such a huge jump in my PS confirmation number from one PS to the next, with only a minute or so passing between the bookings. It is an indication of just how busy WDW dining is! When I call, I make one call for all my PS, and I sit down to organize it all ahead of time so I can be as efficient as possible for the CM who is helping me out. I always have a backup plan, in the event a restaurant I want is not available. I have always received such wonderful service from the CM's at dining and reservations (WDWTC and CRO)! I am thankful for you and the other CM's who put up with the same questions over an over again, and do it with a smile! Thank you! :wave2:

I want to make PS but still haven't figured out which parks to do which days. We arrive on the 15th so our first day in the park will be a Monday and we are staying off site. I'm leaning towards MK or AK for Monday or Tuesday. Please send some advice my way.

Safari Steve -

What you said is SO true. They are simple suggestions that seem like common sense, but I do think people (including myself on occasion) get VERY worked up about their PS's.

Your advice, therefore, is well taken and will help everyone get PS's more efficiently - just remember, you could be the one hanging on the phone behind someone who "doesn't have a clue".

Thanks for the solid info, Steve. I hope you feel better for writing it! At least it was just a temporary assignment, right?

Especially thanks for shooting down the myth of same-day availability for CRT. It seems that every time somebody posts their frustrations about getting a PS, someone suggests going to the castle that morning and asking if they have an opening!

I hope a Mod takes this post and anchors it at the top so it doesn't get lost. This is great info, for newbies and veterans.

Thanks Safari Steve!

I actually had alot of fun with dining. Learned quite a bit and got to work with some neat people (and even ended up on the line with the DIS' own Dan Murphy!).

Informative post--.
Have to say over the years I've never had any trouble with WDW DINE. But I always know in advance when and where I want to eat, and I always make PS well in advance. And there are just the two of us.
It can get a bit more complicated with larger parties, "immediate" PS requests, and cases when callers don't even know exactly when or where they want to eat.

Steve you are such a sweetheart !!! Thanks for posting this and lets hope that it will help others to use a little common sense and a LOT of courtesy when calling WDW-DINE. The CM's are indeed doing their best to accomodate everyone who calls.

Linda

I wish I thought you made up that "do you want my children to starve??" bit. Oy.

thanks for the good hints...have to admit I was recently one of the "what ever time you have open for Ohana's" culprits which did not make for a happy CM ( at least it was a woman so it was not me making S.S rip his hair out.:o !)

Excellent information, SS!!

Do you have any other tips/advice/desires as a dining CM for those of us calling Disney Dining?

Hey, nothing like some real adventure answering phones, eh Steve?;)

Good suggestions, all of 'em. Following them will not only help keep CMs out of the local mental ward, but will also make your PS experience easier and more productive, as Steve says.

Even though I still think he wants my kids to starve...

Thank you for the good advice and information some of which opened my eyes to things I did not consider or even think of when speaking to CM about PS arrangements. Thanks again::yes:: :wave2:

yes, asking at the podium the morning of does you NO GOOD......we kinda get sick of hearing "do you have any cancellations?" and we have to say "no, we book, 90 days in advance...." and then people yell at us and tell us they know and walk away in a huff....

haha ok...sorry I was ranting.....

My favorite was a guest yelling at me and asking me why I didnt inform them of the policy (60 days at this time). Sorry, you're right. It is my job to contact everyone who thinks of booking a WDW vacation and informing them of the policy for booking breakfast at CRT. I must have forgotten to call you ;)

Another guest asked why we did not have a sign stating the policy on the way into the park. Yeah that would have helped you since we have been booked for 60 days! Seeing the sign 5 minutes ago would have helped you plan?

Great post with lots of useful info! Thanks for taking the time to share it all. it helped me greatly! :)
