Had the opportunity to see a sneak preview of the new Pixar film Inside Out staring Amy Poehler. It was a special event ran through Fathom Events that included a 15 minute tour of the Pixar Studios in Emeryville, CA. and then at the end a 20 minute or so interview with Director Pete Docter and Amy Poehler. Not sure if it was because of the time (6 p.m.), lack of advertising, or everyone had spent their movie money on Jurassic World, but there were only 15 of us in the theater. I was shocked at the lack of people. As a bonus we got an Inside Out lanyard and a really nice Inside Out poster (frame worthy).
The tour of Pixar Studios was super cool since I had always wanted to see what it looked like on the inside. Let me say that the people working there have created some of the coolest offices I've ever seen. Neatest one was set up like the inside of a cargo plane that had crashed in the jungle. They went and visited different areas of the studios that are all working on different upcoming Pixar movies including Toy Story 4, Finding Dory, and The Lucky Dinosaur. They also gave some great insight on what it's like to try and develop a story at Pixar. Seems like it would be an incredible place to work.
The movie itself was right on par with what you expect from Pixar, a quality film. I must say, at no time did this one ever feel like a childrens movie, which is good. In the Q&A session afterwards, Pete Docter said they don't make movies for children, they make them for themselves which you will totally feel. My 14 year old loved the movie and put it right up there with Ratatouille. There are tons of little Pixar and Disney references in the film, but you need to be observant and on one of them use your ears. The first quarter of the movie feels like it's a little slow to get going, but once it does you'll be along for the ride. The characters are great, I especially liked Lewis Black as Anger and I'm going to say two words and let you find out about it: Bing Bong.
And lastly, there is a new short before the movie called Lava, which is now our favorite Pixar short of all time. And I'm warning you now, bring some tissue not because it's sad, but because this short is so sweet and beautiful. Absolutely amazing.
I was trying to decide what age would be appropriate for this film. I really think kids ages 7+ will get the most out of it and understand it. However, I think adults will like this film the most.
I sure hope this film does good because when Pixar does original material they are on top of their game. I don't think there is any animation studio that can compare to their storytelling and I'm always craving something new from them. I don't believe any sequel Pixar has done is better than the original. What I worry is this film is overshadowed by Jurassic World and will not do as good as it should.
