Inheritance message to our daughter today…

We hid 21 hard boiled eggs for the kids’ egg hunt (all in their 20’s), they almost gave up on the last one, I said no way, that’s 29 cents.

My sons know every time I go to the casino I'm spending the inheritance but hey everytime I might win big....it goes right back to them. So I feel like I have my own little Stock Market going with them!!

I understand this. But when you buy something it is not spending your children's inheritance, it is spending the money you earned and have a right to spend any way you choose. I am a saver. But I am saving for ME not for my children after I am dead.

Which is what is funny about it. It is saying to them... don't wait around for us to die, take care of yourself and I will take care of myself and if, by some chance, there is some left over after I die... it's all yours kid. Just don't count on it. If I were a multi-millionaire then that would be different, but I'm not and they need to plan for their own future.

I never really understood the concept of leaving your kids inheritance. You earn the money, you get to spend it. Saving money just so you can leave it to them after your dead makes no sense to me. Other than any money left in my retirement account & possibly pension, the only inheritance my kids might get will be the proceeds from the sale of my house.

I'm with you on this, for the most part. My parents didn't have a lot of cash assets (never did, really) but there was decent-sized land holdings that had been passed down for 4 generations. My siblings and I finally sold it all as none of us and certainly none of our children, were interested in living on it or working the farm.

There will be nothing like that for my own kids. We've never had enough to plan a legacy for them, nor do we feel particularly obligated to. They will split whatever, if anything, is left when we're both finally gone.

My mother holds her money up over my head too. Always making sure she mentions it.

I don't know why, I won't out live her. I hope to not out live her either as I think she'll make it to her 90's and I don't want to make it to my 70's.

It made me laugh. All our kids want from us is the lake house. Should not be an issue, but 2 of the 3 could afford to buy it from us now if we needed the money.

This makes no sense. Not like eggs are $25 a dozen. You can get an egg for less than $1. How are spending inheritance buying eggs? Now flushing money down the toilet on spending $40k for a car. Sure.

HPAI is doing a number on the bird population as we speak (about the same time as last year, which led to the price jump in eggs several months later). So look for eggs to skyrocket again in a bit if they can't get it under control.

I got the joke. I don't think it warrants all the second guessing about how effective of a joke it is. It's just a little silly thing.

It is not hard to spend 40k on a car and I don't consider flushing it down the toilet. My current car is 13 years old and I paid in the 30's for it. Expect to get a few more years out of it and it has been worth every penny as it is an SUV that seats 8 that we also treat like a truck. We are building/rehabbing our fifth house with it which has been very beneficial to us and our children.

Exactly! I wish my mother had spent some of her money, instead of "I can't afford, I can't afford" and being miserable for so long. FINALLY, after fighting moving for so long, she sold her house (on which she had no mortgage) and moved into assisted living, which she quickly loved. But unfortunately, in well under 6 months she died. I don't want an inheritance. Instead I'm giving it all to the various agencies that helped her.
