What is this marathon, as we will be there when its on. Is it actually at Disneyworld.?? Will it be busy on the Sunday?? First timers, SORRY!!
Hey Caltha!!!!
You can find dates and times on Disney's Wide World of Sports page. When the page opens on the left side is a sidebar, click Head Line events and there is the button for WDW Marathon.
They do close done roads on Saturday morning and Sunday but they times you have to be thru certain areas. Like Saturday for the Half we had to be thru the Magic Kingdom by like 8 something. The races start at 6 am on both days. Mile 6.3 was just outside the MK after going thru it. I believe the MK is cleared of runners for the Half before it opens. But like AK, Epcot and MGM those parks will be open when the races is going thru. Epcot is the end for both races and the 1st year we ever saw a Marathon we were in the AK and I think we crossed the course once and at that point they have a CM telling you to wait and when there is a opening they will tell you to cross (preferrably quickly LMBO) this year the roll was reversed for me as I went thru Epcot and CM's held guests for us. Wild! LOL
The crowds in 2004 and 2005 weren't that bad due to the Marathon. In 2006 and I believe again in 2007 there will be more crowds due to when the holidays are falling. We came across people from Canada who's children didn't have to be back until the week after the races that or they decided to keep them out a few more days but they figured it would be better to go during that week leading to the race weekend and a few days after due to crowds being better than Christmas. We also met a nice family from Australia (sp? sorry if it's wrong!!!) who's teenagers were on their summer holiday. So it wasn't just Marathon Weekenders filling up the lines.
By Monday the crowds were thining but not empty by all means but a huge difference compared to when we arrived on Thursday and Friday. Tuesday and Wednesday were really nice. We departed on Thursday. Watch out for MLK weekend the following weekend. I've heard the crowds go up again for the long weekend. But how bad I have no idea.
Regardless for it's not THAT bad. It's not summer lines, nor Christmas week crowds. Be prepared for some waits and if they're not there it will be great but if not then your mindset will be there to deal with it.
It is a lovely time to visit so I hope if you are there during that time you have a wonderful time. The weather is typically lovely. We've need a coat a few times so do watch the weather as we get closer but it's comfy.
If you have kids they have kids races so check out the Wide World of Sports. I haven't had the pleasure of catching them in person but the bits of video I've seen are great!
There is also a 5K that will go thru MGM on Friday but it starts at 7 am I think and you have to do it with a 15 minute mile which means they should be done by 8 am but at least MGM will be cleared by the time it opens so it shouldn't affect other guests too badly. I'm hoping to sign up but 1st have to see how I do next month and if I get a strain again or not

Gotta save my legs/feet for the Half

The 5K is a new course for 2007 so it should be really kewl.
I'm sure someone else might have more info on how long it takes to get places on Sunday but I've only had the one encounter that 1st year with the Marathon in progress.
In 2006 we slept in, went to DTD to shop and have lunch and THEN headed to the MK since they were doing an evening version of Early Entry for resort guests. In 2007 we're going to sleep in and hope to get to Epcot around 11 am to start cheering on those going thru Epcot on their way to the finish line.
Anyways, enough of me gushing on and on about the weekend LOL
I hope if you come you'll enjoy yourselves as much as we have each January. Happy planning on your trip!!!!
Boy am I chatty today! LOL
