Information from DCL or lack of?

Absolutely. But I also think it's possible that some people would also cancel because they want what would be included in a cruise that's 95% vaccinated (ie. less restrictions). I can see people accepting some protocols but would want something closer to what they feel is a normal cruise.
If they go that route everyone with kids will be canceling. An adult-only cruise certainly wouldn't be a normal Disney cruise. LOL. It would also be a pretty empty cruise. They'd have to significantly lower prices to win over the Carnival and Royal adult cruisers. I have a cruise booked on the Mardi Gras which I'm going to cancel, but it is about 1\3 the price of the Fantasy.

It may not be a normal Disney cruise, but DCL may still consider it if they believe it's their best recourse at this time. I don't think people will fault them for that decision and will cruise with them again once the restrictions are relaxed. I think everyone believes these protocols are just temporary.

Disney has all the data to make this decision. They know how many people are booked on every cruise for the next few months. They know how many rooms have kids under 12. They know the minimum occupancy they need to hit to be profitable, and the maximum occupancy to hit to meet guidelines.

I am sure they have run every combination from "allow everyone on" to "vaccinated adults only" and everything in between in trying to decide what to do next.

What they choose to do with that data is anyone's guess until they release protocols.

100% Agree!

Since initial cruises will sail at reduced capacity, I don't think DCL would have trouble booking with their loyal customers (who either will travel without their kids or who don't have kids). The 7-night fall cruises don't have nearly as many children as those that sail during school breaks. I don't think DCL will go this route, but I think if they did, they could get people to sail and pay full price (myself included).

Or have kids over 12 that are vaccinated.

Here's the thing. Nothing is worse for Disney than a huge outbreak on a ship. With the Delta variant, that means you have to have confidence that everyone is going to follow the protocol and mask, effectively. As the other cruise lines have concluded, the price is too high to take that risk. I think that the contagious nature of the variant is going to be the deciding factor, and ultimately they will have to go vaccinated only.

Here's the thing. We are almost to the end of summer anyway. There are not ships full of children under 12 between September and the holidays, generally, especially since they won't sail full anyway for distancing. It is currently anticipated that the vaccine will be approved for kids 6 to 12 by October or November, and that there's a very good possibility they could get to fully vaccinated (except for 2 and under) by the holidays. All they have to do is run out the clock until kids can be vaccinated, while making as much money and not having a major outbreak in the interim. I think ship-based transmission of the virus has got to be avoidable at all costs. They don't want to be in the headlines for some kid on a ventilator because they caught COVID on DCL.

Very well put

Every article I read regarding vaccines for under 12 say they are hopeful by mid winter....possibly January as
a goal. Yeah they can try to run out the clock. Not for 5-6 months though. DCL is certainly in a conundrum.

And I can imagine there would be a number of parents who would be uncomfortable taking their unvaccinated child on a cruise regardless of whether they are permitted to do so.

There are a decent number of toddlers and nursery kids on fall sailings, even if Edge is a bit light.

Speaking as a parent, I know a lot of parents who wouldn't get their kids vaccinated/are not getting their 12+ kid vaccinated, and who are still hopping mad about the kids masking all winter at school because "it doesn't hurt kids."

So I suspect a larger number of parents than you might think would be willing to go full unvax with kids.

I don't doubt that is correct, but there just have to be enough "fully" vaccinated families to mostly fill up the 4 ships on school breaks. (And by fully, I am excluding kids under 2)

It is the unvaccinated ones, willing or not, that could cause it all to be shut down again. And despite what they do on kids, I do not see any way they can safely sail with unvaccinated adults. I think Disney is probably hoping NCL wins its case.

Sorry, I think I didn't clarify myself properly. I was suggesting that, along with possible lower numbers of kids due to school in Sept (as pp mentioned), some may also be choosing not to book with unvaccinated kids because they're afraid of a possible outbreak. Perhaps not a significant amount, but this would add to a decrease in bookings.

Yes, exactly! Great posts! I personally won't be getting on any cruise that isn't mostly vaccinated as I want to lessen my potential for travel disruption. It's just common sense.

I've been following the UK situation very carefully (my daughter is there and I've been three a couple times in the past few months), and Delta in the US in only just beginning. I think people don't get what is waiting in the wings.

I was also told by a moderator that opinions on Covid are not allowed?

Webmaster's policy is here: https://www.disboards.com/threads/policy-on-covid-related-discussions.3840344/

"We will NOT welcome debate or opinion about medical, scientific, or political aspects of the pandemic. There are a few often repeated trigger items that won’t be allowed: No statistics about infection rates, no ranting about individual rights, no “face-diaper” comments, no debate about whether vaccinations or masking are effective, no discussions about which governor or politician or news personality did or said what.

In summary: COVID related discussion should be limited to actual policy and practical application, and NOT veer into opinion or debate."
