If driving & go thru toll roads, don't take the "Exact Change" lane where money is thrown into the machine. We did this in Feb. & the light never turned green. I know we had 6 quarters - $1.50 as required. I know the money all went into the machine. I know there were not any foreign or bad coins. I had checked them carefully when I packed & at airport before leaving with rental car.

I pulled just past the machine onto the berm & walked to the booth. I told the person what had happened & what do I do to be sure I don't get fined - pay her & get receipt? She said don't worry about it, happens sometimes.

On my credit card statement I got $4.75 charge from Alamo for the toll. Not complaining about the amount, just thrilled I didn't get a big toll fine & Alamo did not gouge me with a big admin fee.

Just want everyone to know the possibilities of the toll cash machine.

I echo your not complaining about the 4.75... Come up to chicago sometime and see what happens when you forget your IPAss and go through the IPAss lane. Tolls are meant to be temporary yet never seems to work out that way.

That is exactly why I go though the manned booth and I get a receipt.
That way, I have proof for both the rental car company and the turnpike commission that I paid my tolls.
I save those receipts for a year, just to be safe.

I strongly recommend getting a receipt for cash tolls, which means waiting in line for the manned lane.

If you take the trouble to stop just after the booth and ask someone, would he give you a paper receipt with date and time for the quarters you said you put in?

If you wrote to the toll agency after you got back home, would they send you a receipt that you could then send to the rental agency?

Does the state have consumer protection laws regarding vending machines?

When throwing into an unmanned machine, there's no proof we actually paid. Anyway, for only $4.75, we wouldn't care to fight it. Just thrilled it's only $4.75! Just wanted others to beware.

Good suggestions to get a receipt & save it. This was our first time to use the unmanned machine - won't do again. But we've never gotten a receipt from the manned booth - good idea. Will do that from now on.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

We always get the receipt for proof in case of a problem, BUT when exiting off of 417, John Young Pkwy, for a grocery stop, there was not an option and of course the machine was broken. We put in all our quarters and never got the green light. What a way to start the vacation-give me some stress!

When we went through another toll and told the attendant, she said not to worry since it's broken and "they" saw that we tried to pay. I hope we don't get charged.

For the exact change (and electronic) only toll plaza you might try writing to the toll agency immediately explaining what happened. (Don't wait until you get home) This would be the same idea as if you wrote to the owner of a vending machine that did not deliver the candy or potato chips or whatever. If the green light did not appear then technically you have not been delivered the goods or services, here, the right to use the road. If you write, you might send a copy (immediately) to the rental company too to see what happens. If you get a reply from the toll agency, send a copy to the rental agency.

"If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us of all unrighteousness." (Not quite correct since you did not sin and the rental agency is not God.)
