Yes, you will need a car. The ML is about 25 miles or so from the Kona airport. The Big Island has varied terrain: black volcanic, which you will see as you leave the airport and also at Volcano National Park; mountainous areas; hilly ranch land (not too far from ML, near Parker Ranch); some beautiful beach areas; the booming little tourist town of Kona; and the tropical rainforest area near Hilo, including wonderful waterfalls and orchid gardens. Coffee plantations are popping up all over and a tour is fun. Helicopter rides over the lava flow at the volcano can be pricey but spectacular if the timing is right. A car is a must to see what the island has to offer. The grounds at the ML are absolutely lovely and historic, fun to walk around. Have a wonderful trip!
