We are taking our first trip to Disney in June. I know this is a very dumb question, but when do you know what room you will be in and what floor? We will be staying at POP and we have a son with cerebral palsey and we requested a first floor room and a fridge for his meds. Can someone please help me out. I need all the info I can get. Thanks so much.

You find out your room info when you check in. I would just call ahead a few days before your trip and just remind them of your request for a first floor room and a fridge due to your son's disability. They usually don't guarantee room preferences, but I find they will do everything in their power to accomodate you.

Rooms are not assigned until about 2-3 days before you arrive. You don't find out until you check in. As long as you put your requests on your reservation you should be fine. I would just make sure that it states these requests are due to medical reasons so they'll realize they are more of a necessity than a wish. Also, you might ask on the DISabilities board. They are very knowledgeable in taking children of all abilities to Disney. I'm sure they'll have a lot of great advice for you.

i don't know about all the handicap accesible rooms at POP, but a few friends of mine arrived late for check in and all that was left was an accesible room with a roll in shower. it only had one bed! you may want to call and ask for a manager to ensure that a room there can accomodate your family's needs.

also, the advice to check out the DISability board is very good advice. they know a lot!

Thank you to got2travel and lowie for your kind words about the disABILITIES Board.

For the OP, the thing to think about is what you need. If you actually need a wheelchair accessible room with a roll in shower, then you need to confirm that reservation with Special Services (an actual reservation for an accessible room, not just a request).
If your child is young and small, you may do better with a regular room - the accessible rooms have things like raised seat toilets that actually made things harder for us when our DD was younger (she has cerebral palsy also and uses a wheelchair).
If all that you need is a room you can get to without going up stairs, then request First Floor for Medical Reasons. Medical Requests are filled before other general requests for the same thing. I have never stayed at POP, so I am not positive, but think that all of the buildings have elevators because it is a fairly new resort.
The refrigerator should also be listed as a medical request.

Just confirming that all buildings do have elevators, worst case scenario if you don't get your request.

I would stress that you need a certain floor due to a medical condition. Every time I went to WDW, my requests for floor or area of the resort went unhonored. My request was for convenience only, so it was okay, we took whatever room was assigned. I would make sure they understand the importance of location for you if it is that critical. Good luck!!! :)
