My mother was diagnosed today with a detached retinae. She sees a specialist on Friday to discuss treatment. Have any of you had any experience with this? I don't know how this is treated or prognosis.

We are leaving for WDW on Sat. Should we consider staying home?

I've never had one, but being an ex-boxer I'm familiar with the condition because it's somewhat common with fighters (it's what ended Sugar Ray Leonards career- or should have except he made a couple ill-fated comebacks after being diagnosed with it).

I'm not an expert on this, but from what I know it while it may require surgery to fix, it shouldn't be anything that has to be done right away or be major enough where you'd have to cancel your trip. . . and depending on the severity they might just wait and see if it heals on it's own.

I'm sorry to hear your mom is dealing with this, but as far as I know it isn't anything you need to cancel your trip over. . :)

My sister had a detached retina last year. The day she was diagnosed, they performed a procedure on her eye that works about 80 percent of the time. It involved freezing parts of her eye. She had to lie in bed for about a week afterwards, flat on her back or on her side to keep pressure off the eye. She wasn't even allowed to get up to get her own meals or anything (my sisters and I would go over her house, and we also arranged for her neighbor to help out).

The procedure didn't work for her, so she had to have surgery on the eye the following week. She had a patch on her eye for serveral weeks, and if she took the patch off, she only had about a 10% field of vision for a while. She had to stay in bed for another week or two while it started to heal. She was out of work for a month. Again, we made arrangements for her to have lunch made by someone.

As for your trip, I'd say wait until after your mom's appointment to make a decision. See how they decide to treat it. If your mom requires surgery, she is going to need a lot of help for a while. Is there someone around who will be able to help her? I'm sure your mom doesn't want you to cancel your trip.

I hope that it goes well for your mom.

I was diagnosed with a detached retina in 96....after further examination, they determined it was only a tear, and were able to do laser surgery and take care of it.
My mom has a friend who had a detached retina and the treatment was similar to what was explained above.
Hoping it all works out well for your family and that it's just a tear.

Good Luck!

I don't have anything to add. I just wanted to say sorry you and your mom are going through this, and to say "HI" I haven't seen you around in ages!!!

Thanks everybody for your kind word and thoughts. I did talk to Mom this morning about postponing our trip and she had a fit. But really, this trip is the least of my worries. She has complete trust in her doctors and a very strong faith. My daughter is a nurse and works only on weekends so she can be there for her. She also has 3 neighbors that are retired and very good friends plus countless people at church, so I know they will stay with her. It's just not me. :(

She is only 68 - which seems younger every day - which should help in her recovery.

Thanks again.
