Infant on lap for Toy Story ride at Studios?

Our baby will be 5 months when we travel. Am I allowed to have him/her on my lap or in a sling while riding Toy Story Mania? I assumed the answer was no because of the way the ride spins around as you move from scene to scene, but I have a friend who said her 8 month old sat on her lap through the ride just fine. Unless there is a height restriction on a ride, can I pretty much bring the baby on anything as long as I'm holding or placing baby in a sling?

We've been told, and heard others told, there is no lap riding allowed. That, I think, is largely due to the way the lap bars work on TSM. The child would either have to be over the bars, or would be sort of squished under the bar...neither of which is safe.

They DO allow you to seat 3 to a car, if you have an infant or toddler (who doesn't need a gun) with you. We've done that, when our youngest was too little to really want to "play".

Yes, if there is no height restriction, your infant can go on with you. Some attractions, I have heard, will require you to remove the child from a sling or carrier and simply hold them. I don't have personal experience with that; it's just what I've heard.

TSM will allow the infant on......this thread will probably evolve into a debate of the safety of that, as threads about this usually do. It's your choice as a parent. If it were me, and I hadn't ridden it before, I'd ride it myself then decide whether to include an infant. IMO, the moves from scene to scene are pretty fast and whip you around quite a bit. When I rode with my DSs (when they were under 2), I simply held them (tightly) and didn't attempt to play. Use your best judgment and enjoy!!!

We always have with absolutely no issues. My dd rode on my lap at 1 and 2, and our neighbors took their 6 month old and had her on their laps, no problem at all. Unless they've changed something in the last year; I'm sure you'd be able to.

Or, possibly, the other way.

We haven't had a "lap rider" aged in about 3 years. So maybe they made a change to allow lap riding prior to your last trip but after the last time we had one that was "lap rider" aged.

I just rode it the other day with 6 month old ds on my lap. I had to sit slightly angled to the side so the bar could come down. I had no issues. Just be sure to hold onto your baby when you move onto the next game.

Our son was 12 months old for his first trip, and we rode TSM multiple times with him on our laps with no problem. You would probably be fine with having him on your lap, but I don't think they would let you ride with him in the sling.

This is incorrect.
To my knowledge, they've always allowed lap riding.

I held my daughter under the lap bar - same thing we did on every other ride with a lap bar and no height limit. I have heard of them making you remove babies from carriers, and only letting them face forward.

Oh boy, I certainly don't wan to start a debate! :)

So for those of you who have done this with a baby, is the baby under the lap bar? I definitely won't be devastated to sit this out with the little one, but would like to know how it works if I do decide to ride.

Okay great, thanks. :) What are other examples of rides with lap bars and no height restrictions?

I'm not positive, but I think Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, Snow White did (but not relevant anymore since it's gone!), HM, maybe Figment. I'm sure I'm missing some - I can't really remember!

When I asked for a rider swap at Toy Story Mania for my 5-month-old, the CM actually told me to put her in my lap. Personally, I was not comfortable with that for several reasons and insisted I did not want her to ride. She finally allowed me to swap, so if you don't want to miss it and don't want the baby to ride, that should be an option. FWIW, the girl I asked for the swap was not happy about doing it, but the other girl working the front of the line looked at her like she was crazy and said it was no problem, so what they tell you there probably depends on the CM you're dealing with.

I did not use a sling, but I did take the baby on several rides with no height restrictions with lap bars while she was snuggled on my chest in the Ergo. No one ever objected.

Okay, that gives me a better idea. I just couldn't picture what other types of rides would apply. Thanks.

Inconsistency among cast members can be so frustrating! I guess if I decide I'm not comfortable with the baby on my lap I'll ask for a baby swap pass and ask again as necessary!

I would never, ever put the child between the adult and the lap bar.
What are your reason(s) for this? I'm not trying to debate, really just hoping to better understand.

Fwiw, that's what CMs always instructed us to do with lap kids. What other option is there?

For the majority of rides with lap bars and no height limit - the rides are slow moving, don't jerk around, etc. And the bar is never all that close to me. It's not like there 4 inches on space between me and the bar and a baby is smooshed in there. I can't imagine what other option there would be - it wouldn't be possible to hold a baby on your lap, over the lap bar.

I took my DD on in January at 4 months. I had her in the baby bjorn and just held her close and made sure her head didn't bounce around between games when the ride vehicle spins around the curve. She slept through most of the ride too.

:thumbsup2 Just because you can, does not mean you should. My common sense as a mother would never allow it the way that ride jerks you around. My dh and I were appalled that some were doing it with infants. I am just giving my opinion as a mother and not to start debating. We all have a choice when things are allowed.

We just rode it last week. I had my 19 month old DD on my lap, between myself and the lap bar. I was completely comfortable with her safety and mine, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that I was even able to play (I'd figured that would be too difficult). The CMs didn't seem to expect us to have ridden it any other way.

It isn't incorrect.

It's what our experience was.

Others have had a different (and probably more recent) experience.

That's why we all post.

From 2008:

It's a tame enough ride so there is no minimum age. But lap-sitting is banned for kids.

It looks like things have changed since we had a lap rider aged kid (our youngest will be 6 in September). Now, in reviewing some of the other dis threads on the subject, it looks like that rule changed some time in 2009.
