We have a 10 week old and will be travelling to WDW soon. Obviously we use a rear facing car seat in our Minivan. The airline requires car seats to be forward facing. We have purchased a seat for him. Can the infant seat be turned around and used as forward facing? What does everyone else do?

When we flew with our son at 8 weeks, we strapped the infant car seat in the airplane seat rear-facing. It worked fine. (We used a Graco SnugRide without the base.)

We also used a Graco infant car seat on the plane for my 3 month old. We used it rear facing without the base and she slept most of the trip.

You can use the infant seat rear facing - no worries.

The second sentance refers to the rear/front facing issue.

I have read simliar informtion on Delta and Southwest. If your unsure hit the webite for your particular airlines. This can help in case of a misinformed FA but I wouldn't worry!

edited to add the verbage as I was on the American Airlines website anyway:

FAA Approved Infant Seat or Child Restraint Device Seat Locations
If you are using an approved infant seat or child restraint device, please note that it...
May face toward the front or rear of the plane in accordance with instructions on child seat label
May not occupy an exit seat or the row in front of or behind an exit seat
May not occupy the space between a customer and an aisle

hope this helps

We also had the Sungride infant seat and used it on the plane rear facing (without the base) in May with no problems.

Yes, rear facing infant seats are fine in aircraft cabins. However, your infant seat MUST have an FAA Approved sticker some where on the seat for the ground staff to inspect. If it doesn't, your airline will not permit you to use the seat for your child and your child will need to be held. Did you purchase another seat for the infant carrier? If not, you could request that they courtesy block a seat next to you for the infant seat, provided that there is sufficient seats unsold/available on your flight. Most airlines are happy to provide this service to their customers when feasable. However, if the flight is full, the seat could be unblocked and a person might be placed next to you. But, if you purchased a seat your space is assured.
