Is there such thing? DD got her letter and really wants the jacket but they're over $200! What happens to all the old ones that kids don't wear anymore? Can't they sell them for some quick cash for college and we can bring them in to a stitcher to be recycled? If not, I'm going to start this as my new business.

What are your school colors and dd's jacket size..there may be a diser with that has one that is willing to part with it.

I don't think there is such a thing as in inexpensive varsity jacket, that is like an oximoron :lmao:

I don't know if it's done everywhere but all of our jackets had our names embroidered on the inside so I'm not sure that would work well for resell value. We all kept them after graduation... kinda just stuck them in a closet somewhere to show our kids someday I think

Yes, they're pricey if you buy them at the local campus store or through the school. Have you looked online? I did I quick check and found some closer to $100 for in-stock jackets, lower if you're willing to go with synthetic sleeves rather than leather.

BTW, my brother still has his and he graduated almost 20 years ago -- I think a lot of people do that.

Her school colors are orange and black. It's a great accomplishment that she got the letter as early as she did and I'd like her to proudly wear it, but that's a heck of a lot of money.

I graduated from high school in '92- mine is in my parents closet. Dh in '89 and his is in his parents home also. Both our brothers from '86 have theirs at the folks home too.

We were lucky that DS got his for free. At his (public) school, any kid who letters get a varsity jacket. In return, they are part of the Varsity Club, and have to work the concession stand at so many games per year (for example a football player might work the concession stand for a basketball game, etc). The profit from that is what buys the jackets.

I know that there are places online that sell them, but they probably aren't going to be exactly like the ones her classmates have...which to a teenager is probably important.

My DD got a light fleece jacket instead of a letter jacket. She didnt want the heavy one. We ended up getting it at our local trophy store and they were able to put her name on it. It looked very nice, quite a few kids had them instead of the regular letter jackets. Of course she had her b-friends jacket too!!!! Lol he spent the $$ and she wore it!

At one point I saw these in a JCPenney catalog. I don't know if they have them any ore but seems like there was a specialty catalog for this type of thing. This was a few years ago though so things might have changed.

My dd's varsity jacket was about $180 but she worked so hard for her letters and it was worth every penny! The jackets were a big thing at her school, so I think she wore hers from October to May! If your dd will wear it a lot and get a lot of use out of it, the "cost per wearing" isn't that high, kwim?

Now prom dresses on the other hand....;)

I think that if she'll wear it then you should try to buy the jacket for her. Mine was near $200, but thats all I got for my birthday/christmas (my bday is in dec). I didn't care and I practically lived in my jacket all through high school...well worth the money to my parents i'm sure. :)

I graduated HS in '95...and I still have mine. I would never DREAM of parting with it...why, I don't know.:lmao:

You're right. It's a great accomplishment and we are very proud of her. She deserves to wear it proudly so we will buy it for her. Go team:cheer2:!
I just wondered if they were ever recycled.

Luckily my son lettered in cross country his freshman year. He proudly wore that coat for 4 years, each year adding more and more to it. It now hangs in our closet because you cannot possibly wear your high school jacket to college:rotfl2: so he states. (I wouldn't expect him to) Averaged the cost of the coat out over 4 years it wasn't bad at all. What it did for his self-esteem was priceless. He will now work on a collegiate jacket which will one day take up residence next to the high school coat:)

My dd got her letter and jacket in her freshman year, this year she is a junior and will wear it this year and in her senior year so even thought we paid a lot of money for it she will wear it for 4 years so I'm ok with that.

I went to 3 high schools, so by the time I would have gotten around to getting a jacket, it was time to move.

I kept my 3 letters though. They are NSF--and my mother (who bounced checks more than she ought to have) though it was humorous that my letters spelled the abbreviation for insufficient funds.
