Inexpensive Souvenirs for Classmates?

We thought it might be nice to bring back some inexpensive souvenirs for DD5's classmates. Does anyone have any ideas what we might find on the Western itinerary?

Actually, my daughter collected shells at CC and took them back to her class. They thought it was 'cool' to have a shell from Disney's Island.

Disney specifically asks that no one take shells from Castaway Cay...they even have t-shirts that say "take nothing, leave nothing". It's all part of the ecology of the island. Debra, you probably missed that information.

As for souvenirs you probably will find the least expensive items in Cozumel.

My DD likes stickers and magnets with the characters on them. Those aren't too horribly expensive, depending on how many kids are in your DD's class.

Oh MY! I didn't see that! Now I feel so bad! I guess collecting shells has always been a prime beach activity for my kids wherever they have been. Is this a 'common' policy on other beaches? I thought that shells were quite abundant on beaches and never thought about them being a problem.

I am sure they saw them when we went back on board. We weren't hiding them or anything, my DD had a clear plastic bag and was carrying them with her. No one said anything.

But now that I know, I will explain it to her and we won't do it again. It never occurred to me that it wasn't allowed.

Sorry I made the suggestion. There are some very nice postcards you can buy on board that are not expensive. I got one for each of my Girl Scouts and mailed them from CC, but I wouldn't want to do that for every child in a class (I only had 8 Girl Scouts). BUT you could mai one to the teacher for the class! It takes a LONG time to get there, so your child will be back by the time it arrives.

On our last cruise in 2001, I purchased the little boxes of cookies for everyone in my office. The boxes were shaped like the Magic. They were inexpensive (at least in 2001) and everyone loved them. Some of them still have the box (without the cookies) on their desks.

The cookies idea is a great one! My son only has 10 in his class, so that would be perfect. We sail the Eastern next week and I was wondering what I could bring back as well. As far as an island souvenier, St. Maarten will probably be my best bet.

We did 2 things:

1. Send a post card from just 1 port of call. The teacher and kids loved it.

2. In the Orlando Airport I found a package of Mickey or Minnie suckers they were 5 for $2.50 (Jan of 2003). I don't remember seeing them on the ship.

I don't remember if they had them on the ship, but while at WDW I bought the Mickey head lollipops that come in bundles. My DD's class is quite big and I found these reasonable once I broke up the bundles and gave each child one.

How about prior to the cruise purchase pillow cases at the dollar store. Once on board, turn them into Guest Services and they will have all the characters sign them.

Antenna toppers (has a Captain's hat) are inexpensive, $3 each. I use them for pen toppers.

I use Disney pens (Walt Disney Resorts or Disney Cruise Line) exclusively at work...then I know who swiped from my desk! Most any ball point pen (such as the Bic style Disney uses) will do. It's a great use if you like to buy the antenna toppers but either don't have a car antenna for don't want to change them for every holiday.

On a separate note, WDW had Valentines, St. Pats Day, and Easter antenna toppers. At the airport store (and I assume in Epcot but I didn't go there) they have antenna toppers for every country in World Showcase. I thought that was cool. And I was even able to match them with the correct country.

While in Cozumel we found in a few shops with little wooden bobble head animals. They are made there on the island and come in many different colors and animals. They are about a an inch tall and wide, but have lots of character.

We bought 15 at a dollar a piece. Not being a big fan of bargaining, we just paid the going rate. In builk I would bet you coudl get a deal.

I brought mine back as souvenirs for co-workers and they were quite a hit.

From Cozumel, we brought back maracas. There was a big basket of them and they were labeled $5 each. We negotiated down to $3 each.

I did the cookies in 2001. I am planning to bring back the antenna balls for everyone in the office this year (May 10, western).

Depending on the age of the kids, this might work. In the shop there was a large treasure chest filled with fake jewels and pieces of silver and gold (mickey gold that is). The sell it by the little velvet bag full. We bought 3 or 4 bags and then divided the "loot" with the class when he returned. (The girls went for the jewels and the boys liked the Mickey gold.

Thanx for the all of the great ideas! I can just imagine a class of twelve 5 yr olds shaking maracas...you couldn't pay me enough to be a teacher(bless you teachers who brave classrooms everyday).

MartyP...hopefully, there will be no "early morning wakeup calls" this time. BTW are you planning another cruise?
