Inexpensive Daisy Meeting Craft

Hi everyone. I am looking for an inexpensive craft to do for an upcoming Daisy meeting.

Please tell me what you think of these ideas (the leader says only spend $20!!)

The theme is spring, so:
1. Bird Feeders (I'll use SOY BUTTER so that no one with allergies will be affected).

Are they working toward any particular petal or journey? I usually base the crafts off of what ever they are learning that week. Otherwise it is just a 'craft class'

I lead a 4-H arts and crafts group and we have done some pretty cheap meetings. Last time we did origami flowers and bunnies. There are websites with directions and you only need to get some colored paper.

The leader doesn't want to do petals. They are close to the end of the year and are bridging to brownies so she thinks it's not necessary.

I thought about this idea and would love to do it, but I would need to buy 25 flower pots, plus the paints. I think the flower pots alone are over $1 each.

Buy a package of paper drink cups (not the ones with plastic coating) and have them paint the cups, plant seeds in them. You can get the paints at the dollar store. Or instead of the paper cups, you can use egg cartons (the cardboard type ones, not styrofoam). Then once the seeds have grown, the girls can transplant them at home. Green beans grow quickly and reliably.

I used to pick up the flowers at Walmart - they'd pick up all of the random flowers off the floor, stuff them into ziploc bags, and put them in the clearance or remnant section for $1.

If you go with the bird feeder, I've done it with Crisco which works ok, too. And nobody's allergic to crisco, lol.

If you want to plant seeds and paint, you can do it yogurt containers, we saved and cleaned them...Then painted them, and planted seeds and it was cheap!

You can make your own play dough pretty cheap. This was a big hit in Daisys when I was a leader. Try google for the recipe. I think the ingredients were really cheap. There is a kind that you don't have to cook and I think it was just salt, flour, water & food coloring.

How about doing some swaps. Look up Girl Scout Swaps and you'll get lots of ideas.

How about doing nature rubbings? - that's almost free. Take them out for a nature walk (very girl scout) and have them bring along crayons. Do rubbings on rocks, tree bark, dead leaves.

Tagboard and paper, a little yarn, and they can make their own Daisy memory books. Have the girls draw their favorite Daisy activity and autograph each others books.

When my girls were Brownies, pom poms took WEEKS. They got SO into pom poms.

Koolaid Playdough

1 cup water
1 cup flour
1/2 cup table salt
1T oil
1 package koolaid

Boil all on stove until forms a mass. Turn out on a floured board. Knead until smooth. Best play dough ever! Recipe can be doubled. I usually make several batches in row lightest to darkest and don't even have to wash the pan in between! The koolaid acts as the coloring agent and as a preservative. Bonus is it smells good too! I sometimes add glitter. I have done this in the class room with groups of 5 or 6. Each child gets to add an ingredient and see how it changes from a liquid to a solid. I would then just use hot water and a bowl.

Another fun one is gak. This can be made as a group project. Uses white glue, water, food coloring and borax. Google for recipe. A box of borax will last forever.

Another one is simply cornstarch and water. We call this goop. The cornstarch never really breaks down and mixes completely! Tons of fun but messier!

You can also do pinecones with Crisco and bird seed if you don't want to use peanut butter. Daisy age love all crafts so you can't go wrong. I like the yogurt container planter idea since it's spring and kids love to grow things. Too bad they didn't do the petals that was really fun for us.

I suggest straight out margarine. Some are allergic to soy also. (speaking from experience)
