I've heard it said that the Indy Jones time is different each time you ride it. Is this true? It seems more like an exaggeration to me. Maybe someone can explain it. Thanks.

No, it is the same. Some people are more expert on this than I am, but when you first start the ride there are three large doors. You go thru one of the three. Apparently they move the doors around so you do go thru a different door each time. But you are always on the same track. It is an illusion.

I just found this:

"Unlike any of those rides, IJA has variation. The cars are programmed to randomly break down, speed up, and slow down. The cars avoid collisions by communicating with each other electronically. At each place you encounter the audio-animatronic Indy, he has several things that he can say to you. Furthermore, at the very beginning of the ride you can go through one of three possible paths, which actually go on the same physical route, though the imagery is different on each path due to different projections on scrims. Combining all of these factors means that each ride on IJA will be a fairly unique experience. The first three times I rode this, I went through 2 different doors, stalled in 3 different places (no stall on one trip, two on another), and heard several different comments from AA-Indy."

Any truth to it?

Hello,

I have noticed that some of the things that Indy says are different when I have ridden at different times, but I am not sure about the actual bumps, stops, etc.

You know what, I was only thinking of the beginning. But when I think about it other parts are variable. Like what happens at the rolling boulder. I remember Indy saying different things at that point. Maybe others who have a better memory than I on this can jump in.

I think there are three different things Indy can say at the end with the crashed boulder.

yes, what's quoted above is correct

in fact, i'm sure it's documented somewhere (probably wikipedia) but i believe a couple of things indy says are along the lines of 'it's about time you got here' or 'they always stick me with amateurs'

They talked about this on a travel channel program. The way it's programmed, each ride can be subly different. The car could stall out at different spots ar be a little rougher or calmer each time, etc....

Wikipedia claims he can say up to five different things:

"Not bad... for tourists"
"Next time, wear blindfolds okay?"
"Tourists, why'd it have to be tourists?"
"Next time, you're on your own!"
"Don't tell me that wasn't big fun!"

In my perception he most often says, "Tourists, why'd it have to be tourists?"

Also, depending on which chamber of destiny you had entered Sallah (John Rhys-Davies) at the end says a different little thing before you disembark. I'll have to pay closer attention to this Sallah detail next time to see what different types of things he says. I only remember one thing where he kinda laughs at his own joke.

Is this ride a rollercoaster ride? I don't do rollercoasters because I am scared ****** by them. But I really would like to try this ride with my kids.

Another added effect that goes along with this is, that while there may be one track, the door that you enter through affects the lighting and colors shown in that first room (Chamber of Destiny). If you go through the "left" door, the room will be green. The "middle" door, the room is very brightly lit with gold. The "right" door, the room is purpleish with stars on the ceiling.

It is not a roller coaster, but it is an intense (bumpy mostly) dark ride. There are no roller coaster drops or anything like that. The ride focuses more on the car's movement for thrills. Also the theming and scenery around you can be a bit intimidating.

"For those of you who drank too much from the fountain of youth, there are strollers available" Maybe not those exact words, but I remember stollers and fountain of youth.

There are three or four places where there are between three and five small variations. While not infinite, the chances are good that you will have a slightly different experience each time.

let's just bottom line it. even without the variations, indy has plenty of re-ride value.

We were there last night. We had been talking to Dave, a CM in the Mad Hatter. He told us the Indy was in fact different every time. That there are variations in what Indy says, the stalls of the car,and which rooms you go through. Last time we were there on Friday the 29th we had ridden Indy and went into the blue room, Yesterday we rode it and went in the green room. It was an entirely different room. It really is a great ride. Oh also , just as a side note, when we were there on Friday, we had ridden on SM and when we were about to get off, the cm asked "WHO WANTS TO GO AGAIN??"so naturally we all screamed YEAH! so we got to go on it twice in a row, that was great!
Thats all Ive got.

Had the opportunity to go on a behind the scene tour of DL with an engineering group years ago and we were able to do many different things, including riding SM with lights on (pre-awesome smoothness), visit the Star Tours computer control room and WALKED the Indiana Jones ride as well as saw the vehicle prep area.

Each car is able to "sense" the car in front of it and start/stop according to if it moves or not. They are also suppose to know the program that was done before it, and will do a different one. There are a few other interesting things I remember too!

Whoever says the Disney magic is broken when you take a tour to see how things work are gravely mistaken. I loved the whole technological aspect of it and have a deeper respect for the imagineering that went into that project.

Oh, and it didn't hurt to be able to walk the park at 3am with lights dimmed and completely empty except for CM's. :p

This is exactly right. We have been on it MANY, MANY times and I've noticed a lot of subtle differences such as when the car "stalls."'

A lot of the time, what he says doesn't match up with the beginning of the ride. We'll go through the wealth "door" but at the end he'll be talking about the fountain of youth.

let's just bottom line it. even without the variations, indy has plenty of re-ride value.

Amen to that!

It was an entirely different room. It really is a great ride.

As someone else mentioned...it is not actually an entirely different room. Just different lighting and thing projected on the walls and whatnot.

If you enjoy the magic of the attraction and would prefer not to know how it works don't read this.

I've taken advantage of the vast amounts of information available on for this ride and from my own experiences on it.

1. Chamber of Destiny - Your ride begins. You'll notice after that first right hand turn that the track proceeds in a straight line towards the door in front of you. The doors to the three chambers move creating the illusion.

2. "Individual" Rooms - As you can see above each room is the same save for a few lighting tricks that make it appear otherwise. Observatory of the Future, Chamber of Earthly Riches, and Fountain of Eternal Youth. The Observatory gives the best view of some of this trickery. The purpose of the stars above is to keep your eyes off the walls on either side of you as it's very easy to see the wall paintings that are better lit in the Eternal Youth Room. The gold and treasure is very easy to see when the screen it's printed on is lit up but again you can still spot the Eternal Youth walls hidden behind it.

3. Indiana Jones - You first encounter Plastic Harrison Ford couragously holding the gates shut to keep what I can only imagine are cast members trying to reach the break area. He says a few different things then points you up to the left. He also lets you know that you're looking at snakes when you see the giant snake. Thanks for the help there buddy. From there you don't see him until you reach the giant rolling ball. He says a few different things as well and is well lit so you don't notice the opening that reveals the track below the ball. Then you round a corner and there he is again with a large broken ball. He says a few things then jerks about as you wait for them to unload the jeeps ahead of you.

4. Faux Terrain - Here comes the science! In case you haven't noticed the jeeps as they cross the bridge in front of you the wheels stay firmly planted on very flat ground yet you still lurch about. This is how they're able to create a different ride experience. The jeep accelerates, decelerates, stalls, dips, lunches and slips all over the place and in very different ways. It's most apparent when the bridge behaves like it's going to collapse and when you're driving like a teenager through the dark and the jeep stalls. It also hesistates differently before driving through the darts.

5. Sallah - Before the ride you're given words of advice by Gimli the Dwarf from the Lord of the Rings. It's a bit odd in my opinion. I know it''s the same actor and he played Sallah in the Jone's films so save your angry nerd remarks. You get the same spiel before the ride but he is nice enough to leave you with a joke at the end that ties into your experience with the Chamber of Destiny. This feature struggles on busy and slow days so expect to hear him joke about the fountain of youth no matter what room you entered.

Check out that awesome Fez. I had no idea he was a Shriner.

That's about it. Even after deconstructing the ride it is still one of the best attractions out there and blows away many if not most theme park attractions. If you haven't been on it prepare to be dazzled. If you have been on it, you're probably going on it again so you can spot the skeleton with the mouse ears hat or look for hidden Mickeys. I think pretty much everybody loves it young and old except for people who prefer their thrills involve children in foreign countries singing about how small the world.
Here's a gigantic picture of "Bones."

Bones rocks. It took me about 25 rides of looking in the right spot before I found him!

I read somewhere that all the Indy animatronics in the ride use hydraulics except for the Indy on the rope above you at the end when the big ball comes and you "drop" down. The Indy on the rope is air powered as the imagineers had to come up with another way to make him move since a hydraulic Indy above the ride vehicle would have leaked oil on the guests.

Am I the only one who thinks the projected skelly above you as you enter the bone room, looks like it was taken off the cover of an 80's metal record cover???? :lmao:

Looking for a picture of my skelly buddy I found this tid-bit
On the Indiana Jones Adventure there is (believe it or not) nearly 160,000 different things that can happen and that are programed into the rides computers. Each of the 16 troop transport vehicles has its own on-board ride control and audio system, allowing it to create the ride combinations. These can range from a small bump from hydraulics, to a flashing light, to a burst of fire.
