A couple of years ago, we released our 500 tickets because it is just too hard for my DH and I to physically deal with the parking, walking, etc... but we love the race. We have been going since the last of the 70's. Last year was had a family party and I created a simple game with small prizes that we all loved. It kept all of us tuned into the race the entire time. Here is this year's game, in case anybody wants to do something similar. The prizes can be changed or just use little candies. The fun is in tracking your car(s) and maybe winning something, plus even the little kids can play!
This is how it works:
1) I print two copies of the starting grid, with a picture of the car and driver. I leave one intact for reference during the race. I cut the other one up into individual drivers/cars. We take turns choosing drivers until all of the drivers are selected. Depending on the number of people playing, you could have several drivers you are tracking.
2) Watch the race and claim your prize if your car "wins". I have lap specific winners, general category winners, the runner-up, and Indy 500 winner.
Game and prizes
(Prizes bagged ahead of time for convenience. I bought a pack of checkered flag suckers and a pack of pull-back toy race cars from Amazon. I also used individual bags of chips, candy, items, and small gift cards.)
