My Rec Center has a 1/8 mile Walking/Jogging track that rotates direction each day.

If you were walking clockwise on a clockwise day and the others on the track are walking counter-clockwise would you:

1) Continue walking clockwise and just "dodge" the others when you meet them coming from the other direction?

2) Point out the sign to the others that shows the daily direction?

3)Turn and walk counter-clockwise as well?

I used an indoor track alot this winter training for a marathon. It actually is easier for folks going in different directions. When I'd come up running behind walkers 3 wide chit chatting it was hard to pass and I'd have to tell them I was coming up and passing them. So you don't run into that when people are going in different directions.

Also, depending on how long you are running, you need to change direction as it is so short of a track and all the turns you are getting hip/knee pain on one side. So for my when I'd be out on the track for 2 hours, I'd change directions every 30 mins. No one ever said anything and most people who were actually running to train for something would do the same.

One indoor track I used years back actually changed direction every 45 mins, they had an alarm sound and people would switch direction as they knew you couldn't keep going same direction.

I would just keep walking the proper way, and leave it to staff to correct if they choose. People are just too crazy these days to try to tell someone they are doing it wrong. I would stay to the right as I approached and leave it up to them to move out of the way.

We had a situation like this at work a couple years ago. We have these big hallways where I am not sure how exactly how long it is to make rounds, but I know it is quite long. A lot of people use that for a "walking track" during lunches/breaks.

Pardon the pun here, but "standard operating procedure" says you walk counter clockwise. We had some people try to go clockwise a few times, I just stayed the course counter clockwise. It was wide enough to dodge them, just stay to the right. Their new trend did not take, so they started going the right way again. :rotfl2:

Probably a combination of #1 and #2. I'm too stubborn to do #3 - not to mention, I'd be worried that other walkers/joggers would see me and think I'm the one who couldn't follow directions. ;)

I pick #1

I’m not someone that enjoys any type of conflict, unless I’m put in a situation where there’s no choice. The people are just walking the wrong way, it’s not the end of the world. They may not realize it or they may realize it and just not care. If they said to me “hey, you’re going the wrong way”, then I would calmly point to the sign. Until that time, I’d just live my best life and do my walking in the correct direction.

My first thought was: "Why on earth would a track switch direction every day?" - but I see someone explained.

I guess I'd follow the rules and only point out the sign if somebody asked my why I was going the "wrong" way.

I agree with others and would avoid 'correcting' someone you don't know in any public setting. You could invite a confrontation since you never know how someone might react or come across as a 'know-it-all'. If the signage is inadequate, perhaps you should mention that to the people who operate your rec center. Likely you aren't the only person who noticed this and if they have a lot of participants, would probably welcome your input.
