Indiana Man Wins Jackpot Days After Layoff
Couple Eye New Home, Education After Snaring $89 Million Prize
POSTED: 8:07 am EST March 15, 2004
INDIANAPOLIS -- Last week, Tim Rivers was put out of a job. This week, he doesn't need it.
New Home, Education On Wish List
Rivers, of Salem, won Saturday's $89 million Powerball drawing. He and his wife, Pam, decided to take a lump-sum payment of $49 million.
Rivers (pictured, left), a father of an infant and a 4-year-old, said he was laid off from a factory job last week.
"I was wondering where the money was going to come from to pay the bills and everything," Rivers told reporters Monday at Hoosier Lottery headquarters in Indianapolis. "I guess the grace of God struck me yesterday and said, 'OK, well, I'm going to give you that money.' "
The couple said they'd like to buy a new house. They currently live in a mobile home in Salem, which is about 25 miles northwest of Louisville.
The couple also said they would like to go to school. Tim Rivers would like to be a mechanic and open up his own shop, and Pam Rivers -- a day-care worker -- wants to become a nurse.
Tim Rivers bought the winning ticket from the Cowboys food store and filling station in Salem.
He went to the store Sunday morning to confirm that he had the winning ticket, RTV6's Derrik Thomas reported.
A store clerk, Kay Hayes, said Rivers showed the ticket and said he "won the big one."
"I took his ticket and I looked, and he had all the numbers, and I said, 'Oh my gosh, you did,' " Hayes said. "He wasn't really too excited. Maybe he was still in shock."
