Indiana Dunes - anyone been?

Looking at the websites and a brochure, it appears to be spread over many miles with mostly cabin type rentals. I'm a little confused, wondering where the cute little walking towns are, with shops and restaurants, that might have motels, too?

Can anyone recommend a good place to stay thats close to the water? Would rather stay in a motel and not a cabin, maybe something like a Best Western or Hampton?

I was at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore yesterday in Chesterton, IN...not sure if this is where you are talking about? Anyways, I know downtown Porter is near there, but I have never been there. I know a lot of people love to camp there, and there are various hotels off of 80/94 that are about 10 minutes away from the lake.

Sorry I can't give any more info...whenever I go, I'm always just there for the day and I always just go for the beach

I know people who have camped in the State Park in Chesterton.

There are hotels there.

I've been there a ton, we just don't stay over night. My aunt had a house in Ogden Dunes and then in Beverly Shores but that is different too.

We are going for the 1st time this weekend. We are staying in Michigan City at the red roof, trying to go cheep!

I used to live in the Michigan City, Indiana/New Buffalo, Michigan area, so I can speak from experience.

For more chain hotels, you are probably going to have to look into either Chesterton, IN or Michigan City, IN. From hotels in either of these places, you will need to drive to the beach. The State Park iteself, as others have said is in Chesteron and has a nice beach.

However, that entire stretch of beach from Chesterton to New Buffalo has different things to do. Of course there is the beach/lake itself with various parks, picnic areas, etc. Michigan City has a casino, another beach and a large high-quality outlet mall as well. New Buffalo is a quaint small town with great restaurants, small shops and a marina.

A very popular burger joint is Redamak's in New Buffalo. Reasonable prices and fun for all!
