Is there anyone here who likes Indian food? We went to the graduation/birthday party for DS's best friend and only a small handful of people there were NOT from India. While there were a few token "American" offerings on the buffet, the Indian dishes were wonderful!! I'd never had it before & of course, the names of the dishes weren't the least bit familiar - so they didn't stick in my head.

I'm looking for recipes, but would like to know which ones other people like.

Any ideas out there?

Thanks!

Deb

I don't know any recipes or names, but I ate a wonderful tomato, cucumber and yogurt salad once at a church dinner. The woman that made it said she didn't know the names of the herbs that were in the dressing. :( If anyone knows what I am describing, I'd love to have the recipe.

I ADORE Indian (although I can't think of many ethnic food varieties that escape my circle of adoration)-but absolutely CANNOT make it properly(but that's probably just me).

The most popular items on the typical Indian menu-or at least what I see in nearly all Indian restaurants-

To start-the pakoras, samosas, papadums, keftas, the tandooris, mulligatawny soup, the chaats...

the curries-tikka masalas, rogan josh, the vindaloos, the jalfrezis, the kormas...I'm drawing a blank... :(

but all with different types of nan or basmati rice, chutneys, tamarind sauce...

and mango lassis (they make other types of lassis too)

Any net search on the above items should net you some recipes-I don't know if I can recommend a good site in particular though-I'm sure someone will come along who may be more helpful!!!

Oh and about that salad-I think it's a raita. I've had variations on this, but I think it's just as you said, yogurt, cucumbers, mint, possibly lemon juice. It's an awful lot like the Greek tzatziki I think. Sorry to be so vague:( .

indian food is very popular here in the UK. We can buy the curry sauce in jars, so I'm afraid I have no idea how to make it, beyond cook the chicken and pour the sauce over the top.
Also, all the other things like pakoras, and samosas are widely available in the shops

My favorite is Korma, which is quite mild.
All those listed by Lilaboo are common over here
-Vindaloo is the hottest, and Jalfezi is pretty hot too.
Chicken tikka masala is based on tomato soup and is 'medium' hot.

The nibbly things are all really nice. We love nan bread, and popadums with mango chutney. popadums are like great big crisps.

I have found this website, but haven't tried any of the recipes on there

I love Indian Food and have cooked various dishes many times. I use a Sharwoods Cookery book that I have had for absolute ages and would willingly share some recipes with you. My only trouble is that we moved recently and my cookery books are still packed. When I can locate the book I can let you have some really good recipes, but it might be awhile yet.

As Bev says, we can get all types of Jars and Packets of sauce mixes here - I find some of them a bit bland sometimes so usually add some extra spice to give them a bit of ooomph!

sorry I cant be of any immediate help.

Bev-

My husband said the best Indian food he ever ate was in the UK, and he has been all over the world. He loves the vindaloo and all of the curries, you can't get it hot enough for him, but apparently it was there, because he couldn't finish it! :D

LOL Candi

there is a restaurant near my office which advertises 'Curry Hell' it is apparantly so hot that it is impossible to finish.
The deal is that if you can eat it all you get it for free.

One of the reps who comes to the office had it one evening, was insisted that he could eat anything - there was no such thing as 'too hot'. he did manage to eat it, but he didn't feel awfully well the following day :o

I really enjoy curry - but only the mild ones - fortunately there are plenty of choices so you can have mild or spicy depending on your preference.

I don't like Indian much (not much of a curry person), but I do really like hot and spicy food. Bev, your post reminds me of a little shop here called 'Wings and Things'. They specialize in buffalo wings and ULTRA hot wings. They have these wings called 'beyond insanity'. If you can successfully eat 10 of them in one sitting, you earn a lousy t-shirt. No point in up'ing the anty, because I've yet to meet anyone who can eat 10. They smell DELICIOUS, but are they ever powerful! The smell lured me in and I ate 3 of them in record time and then felt like I was dying. I had a hard time for about 48 hours, lol.

I never thought I was much of a curry person either. :) I had a curry recipe that I made - but only once in a great while. I felt one recipe was enough! I was amazed when I received recipes from Boma with curry. I guess if you think about it you can taste it...but it's not the most prominent - or overpowering - taste.
