Independent Audit Blasts Disney For Pulling ‘Bait And Switch’ On Florida: ‘A Mousetrap’

I am no judge so it is for law enforcement to say but if it is true that they did not open bids for tasks paid for with tax money there is a problem.

As a citizen I want the practice of all Reedy Creek like enterprises to stop everywhere, regardless of how they sprung up and with whose nods of approval. This buys no sway from me.

There's been controversy in Florida over the use of tax money in non-bid contracts, and possibly for purposes for which they weren't authorized by law. Also the inadequate responses for Florida Sunshine Act requests as to how that money was spent and the rationale for awarding a no-bid contract.

I'll leave it at that.

Why does it matter what I think about that? If I say yes, what changes?
So you complain, again, that your views aren’t being heard, but Disney shouldn’t be allowed to express theirs at all. I know your avowed desire is to push back on the echo chamber - maybe work in a little Tsun Tzu with the Alinsky? Dunno …

That's the thing of it though, to my mind Government regulates things and does not "bog down the process."

When it is permitted to function without interference it promotes the will of the people via voters, I am no fan of anything that interferes.

Yeah I think government does bog down the process. It definitely slows things down. Disney didn't want to deal with Orange County to widen the roads and supply utilities every time they wanted to construct a new hotel. Now they can just tell Reedy Creek to make it happen. It is much faster for them.

How long has it been, since you tried to get a permit for any type of construction? Our home construction was held up over a year, due to the permitting process.

Edited to correct typo.

Maybe that’s true, but Disney clearly didn’t think this was the case originally. Keep in mind that Disney DID NOT lobby against the bill until after it was passed. Disney is a powerful lobby in the state of FL. And this was not a bill they chose to lobby against. Because I assume they didn’t think it was beneficial to them. So standing up for their employees? Please.

I agree with you that Disney management probably didn't care that much. It wasn't until the bill passed and some of their employees were going to be relocated to Florida that the whole thing blew up.

There was castmember outrage over it before the legislation passed. A good amount of CMs were angry at Chapek on the Hub when he gave his apolitical statement early on. Witnessed and read a lot of it as I was a CM at the time. There were also those who spoke in support, but there were more who disliked his initial stance weeks before it passed.

My understanding is they didn't say anything about the bill until months after it was passed, and only then because they were getting pressure from their employees (and others?) TO say something. So maybe it's the employee's fault they didn't ask Disney to do something beforehand?

Chapek made his initial remark to the company taking an apolitical stance weeks before it passed. The opposition remarks from him and the company came a day after it passed

Exactly. The State of Washington is crazy on what they issue professional licenses for. I think everyone understands the need to ensure certain medical professions and engineers working on critical life safety designs should be regulated and licensed. However they also license... "Announcer for combative sports". Really? Why does this profession need to be licensed. Just overzealous government regulation if you ask me.

Depends on the construction. I needed a sewage line repair and a plumber obtained a permit in a few minutes. But I get letters from a building dept about neighbors requesting variances and those actually get hearings and can take months to obtain after objections are filed.

John, you should send the governor a copy of The Art of War. He could use it. :)

But who was a majority? Doubt we’ll ever know.

It does when people keep saying Disney had to speak out to support their employees. That may be true or it may not.
Actually, I don't think anyone is saying Disney HAD to speak out to support their employees. They CHOSE to speak out, because their employees wanted them to.
