Then you are after non-stop. In the travel industry direct means that a plan can make a stop along the way, but you don't have to get off one and onto another. Many SouthWest flights are like that so be sure you know what you are buying.
You can always go ahead and purchase your flight down right now, and then purchase the return flight when those dates are released. With SW, there is no savings on purchasing 2 one way flights vs a round trip flight
The non-stop on Southwest on Jan. 2 is rather pricey (I think), so I would wait for AirTran. I don't think AirTran will have ceased to fly that early in 2012, and they will probably offer several non-stop flights vs. Southwest's one.
Air Tran now has 4 non-stop flights each way from IND to MCO and 4 non-stop back to IND. They have a good selection of times. SWA only has one non-stop each way for IND to MCO. With the merger who knows what will happen, but I'm not looking forward to it.
Don't want to be a Debbie Downer...but the last few Air Tran non stops I've booked have either been changed into stops thru Atlanta or they changed the times so we couldn't make our flights back because of being on a cruise.
