We've just discovered Concha Y Toro "Frontera" Cabernet and Merlot mix. At $5.99 a bottle (BJ's wholesale) it is remarkably good!
My husband is a huge wine lover and in our "cellar" (literally, our basement) he has about 200 bottles of wine. However, unlike most wine snobs, his he always has about 20 bottles or so of everyday wine always on hand, along with the good stuff - which candidly, I have little appreciation of! I don't drink red, but love a good rose (not white zin!) and sauvignon blanc. I am one of the ABC crowd (anything BUT chardonnay). We are always on the look out for great wines and am excited to try out some that have been mentioned here.
Our favorites are below, only 1 or 2 cost more than $10:
Forest Glen Cab (my DH's "house wine" at $7.99/bottle)
Montes Cab
Concha y Toro Xplorador and Casillero del Diablo (slightly better than the one mentioned above, and only about $1 more)
Bogle Sauvignon Blanc
Brancott SB
Bonny Doon Vin Gris de Cigare
Elsa Malbec (Argentina)
Borlotti Prosecco
Wishing Tree Shiraz
Nobilo SB
La Granja Basa Rueda (Spain )
Trapiche Malbec
Escudo Rojo Baron Philip (Chilean joint venture with Rothschild)
Goats do Roam Rose
La Vielle Ferme Rose
Monkey Bay SB
A few months ago, the Boston Globe published a list of 10 great wines for under $10. All were available in wine shops in the Boston area. I don't think you'll find them in big stores, though. Here it is:
White
2003 "Les Vignes Retrouvees" Cotes de Saint-Mont "'Rediscovered' traditional vines from the Four musketeer country "Fruity, but crisp and dry; some nice mineral elements; versatile" 8.95;
2004 La Noble Chardonnay Vin de Pays d'Oc - Packed with pure dry chardonnay fruit "Some flesh and weight; unoaked style; lemon-lime keynote" 8.95;
2004 Chateau Le Payral Bergerac Sec - Sauvignon and Semillon from just east of Bordeaux "Brisk, bright sauvignon fruit and a nice stony- flinty- smoky edge" 8.95;
Red
2003 Molissimo Terre Degli Osci IGT Montepulciano and Aglianico from the Italian Adriatic. As the name implies it is "Molise-most" "Some lovely sweet black cherry fruit, plenty of flavor, and a little complexity. A find". 9.95;
2004 Bodegas Tikalo "Alba Liza Tempranillo from La Mancha south of Madrid "Marvelous balance of fruit, earth, and acidity; enough weight for richer dishes; a gem" 8.95;
2004 Excelsior Cabernet Sauvignon For three vintages this has been our most popular Cab. The 94 is the biggest & spiciest yet yet "Big ripe style; powerful smoky bacon-y profile; some chewy textures." 9.95;
I think it's time for a glass of wine now!! This thread has made me thirsty.
