Incredibly Good CHEAP Wines.

I thought I would start a thread on incredibly good, little known cheap wines. I am always reluctant to try them but yesterday I was at Costco and the attached liquor store had a sign up for Austrailian Shiraz, "Crocodile Chase". I love the Aussie names. Anyway, it was $2.99 a bottle. I brought it home and tried it and it is an excellent Shiraz and I like it better than many others I have tried for a lot more $$$. Its actually lighter than I ever expected. I went back to buy a case today and it was all gone!! He said "the Crocodile has left the building"!! I was amazed that they sold out so quickly since yesterday and he said that the Croc is mostly bought by repeat customers who also love it. So! Do you have any cheap, obscure wines that have really surprised you?

I like Australia Yellowtail Shiraz or Cab, it's about $5.99 each. I also like Gallo Cab (from Napa), $11. Very solid and dependable.

Charles Shaw-aka "2 buck Chuck" is 2.99 at Trader Joe's. And I just got a Blue Moon-Merlot for 3.99. My new Favortie Mid price is Bogle around 8.99 here.

I like Yellowtail as well, prefer the Cab but there is a lot of Yellowtail, and Fish Eye for about $6. However, $2.99 is amazing!! I don't know how they can afford to bottle and ship it! I think that there are a lot of good moderate priced wines but the really cheap wines are what amazes me. I was amazed that it had a real cork and not a synthetic one as I expected.

Every Christmas, World Market brings out Electric Reindeer wines. They're around $5 and are really nice. And very strong.... I think about 14%! I look forward to them every year.

I have heard of 2 buck Chuck. I don't think we have a Trader Joe's around here. Did you like the Blue Moon Merlot?

I am a big fan of our local winery Ste Chappelle.

They have consistently won world honours for their ice wine, which is my favourite but they make a wonderful Chardonnay.

I like to support our local wineries here they make a great product and are easily accesible. I met the Vintner from Chappelle last year at an event, he was a wonderful man.

Another vote for 2-Buck-Chuck. It's really good and boy, it packs a whallop (it seems very strong compared to "better" wines). So cheap in many different ways, I guess!

I actually prefer cheap wine to really good stuff. Expensive wines are far too dry for my taste.

All Cabernets:

Kendal Jackson, Mondavi, Woodbridge, Turning Leaf, BK, (A lot of French Bordeaux's), Are all great values (less that $10). We've kind of gone off the Australians for now. The tanin doesn't seem stable from batch to batch. So you can get a good bottle right next to one that might as well be vinegar.

Wal-Mart customers soon will be able to sample a new discount item - Wal-Mart's own brand of wine. The world's largest retail chain is teaming with E&J Gallo Winery of Modesto, Calif., to produce the spirits at an affordable price: the $6-8 range. Wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to throw a bottle of Wal-Mart brand wine into their shopping carts, but there is a market for cheap wine, said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I. "There is wine in a box that people are willing to buy," she said. "The right name is important."

My DBF is a master at finding the good, but cheap wines at wine shops. He and I get a reisling called Bend in the River for $3.99 at a local store. We saw it elsewhere recently for $9. Also, any of the Bonterra wines (from CA) are usually inexpensive, but good.

I just bought a bottle of 7 Deadly Zins - It was 12.99 - a little more than what has been mentioned...
It was pretty good...Not to mention the label is cool too...

This is going to seem like a shameless plug, but I swear to you up and down it's not! Some of our closest freind's (and their family) own the "Chilean Sea Bass" label. It took years and about 30 trips to South America to get it right, but they got it right! It's an awesome, awesome, awesome Chardonnay.

OP...I like any kind of White Zin that comes in a jug and cost under $15 Seriously, I really do...my needs are very simple Paul Mason makes a good one.

If you have a Trader Joe's nearby, check out La Boca wines. They're $3.99 and the chardonnay and merlots are wonderful.

TJ's also has some very good reislings for under $5 and their $6 champagne (I forgot the name - it begins with a C and has gold foil) is also good.

I've found a brand at Meijer called Funky Llama. It's usually $3.49 a bottle!! And sometimes they run it for 3 for $10! Good drinkin' wine when you're watching American Idol in your PJs and don't have anybody to impress!

Seriously, I like the Beringer wines and most are between $6-9.
