On our last trip, we toured DVC because I wanted to see what the accomodations at AKV and BLT looked like. I am a little familiar with DVC and how it works, but I do have a question. Awhile ago thought that I read that the number of points required to stay at a resort was increasing. When I asked our guide if the number of points required to stay increased, he said, "No, the dates of the seasons change but the number of points stay the same." However, when I got home and looked it up, it said, for example, AKV adventure season value studio 8 pts 2009 and 9 pts 2010. This seems contrary to what I was told. Did I misunderstand what the CM was saying? Does the number of points required for a stay increase regularly? Thanks for any information about this.

Does the number of points required for a stay increase regularly?

the total points required to stay at a DVC resort each year in total cannot change. the points required for any given stay can increase but must be offset by a corresponding decrease elsewhere. (which may not help your - or my - individual situation...)

Disney has made an adjustment in the point charts from 2009 to 2010, which is the first adjustment made in the point charts in many years. In the adjustment, the total number of points for a resort for the entire year has remained the same. Disney cannot increase the total number of points for a resort. In fact, in the Animal Kingdom Declaration of Condominium, there is specific language that states a cotenant is assured one use night in a studio for each 15 points they own.

Although Disney cannot increase the total number of points, it can adjust the number of points for particular days of the week or seasons of the year. In the 2010 adjustments, the cost of most weekday stays are going up and most of the weekend stays are going down. For example, an AKV studio with value view is 72 points a week during January in 2009; in 2010, that same accommodation goes up to 73 points. But for the Choice season in October, an AKV value studio goes down from 74 to 73 points.

The 2010 adjustments have benefitted those who stay mainly on weekends, and have been detrimental to those who only stay during the week. An AKV value studio in January was 40 points for Sunday-Thursday in 2009. This is going up to 45 points in 2010. But the Friday-Saturday weekend stays are going down from 32 points to 28.

When we bought into DVC, we bought a few more points than what we think we need, just in case there are adjustments in future years.

OK....It makes perfect sense now. I guess I would have noticed if I looked at the chart more carefully. Thank you so much for clarifing this for me!:thumbsup2

We have limited discussion on this hot topic to the 2010 Point Thread Reallocation that is linked above. Thank you.
