My mom is starting to enter the incontinence issues. She is having some urgency issues and not always making it to the restroom in times.

Does anyone have some recommendations on which liners, pads, to try first?

What do i need to figure out? She is about 5'3", about 100lbs.
Is there a size and absorbancy amount?

Do you start with the poise pads, or depends?

If someone has some recommendatons, thanks a million.

Sorry, I can't give you any advice on liners. It really depends on the amount of incontinence that occurs at the time. But...has she seen her physician? There is some medications that work well for some, although some people really feel like the medication dries everything. Also, she could also see a physical therapist for exercise instruction. Some teach more than the Kegel exercises. I teach a program that is somewhat easier than the Kegels, but works the pelvic floor muscles, helping to decrease the urgency. I know for some it is hard to admit that there is an incontinence issue, but there is help out there!

I agree with seeing the doctor. Lots of new meds available. A dear friend of mine in her 80 suffered for about 7-8 years. She now has no problems.

If she still is going to need something (I have no rec there) I would also suggest buying some underpads because there are going to be leaks.

The underpads are about 2' x 3' - plastic liner on one side with absorbent material on the other. I use them for my dogs as they are much cheaper than peepads (and bigger), but they are mean to put in chairs or beds for people with "leak" problems. I buy them by the case at Sam's.

Hello from the front line of the oh-my-God-I've-got-to-pee brigade! :scared1: I'm only 49, but I've been dealing with this issue for a while. Started after I had some surgery a while back. At any rate, I use the Poise pads, and they have a handy dandy diagram in the lower left hand corner of the package that indicates where the product that you're looking at ranks on the scale of thier products. If what you buy isn't enough, move on up the scale - get larger pads next time. If your mom is having LARGE problems, you might consider Depends, but most folks really hate the idea of wearing diapers (I know I would! and I'm not there yet).:rolleyes1

The meds like Vesicare, Detrol, etc. are a real godsend. Once I started on one, I have almost no problem as long as I don't wait until waaaaaay too long to 'go'. I resorted to talking to the doc last year before our Disney trip cause I just knew I'd never survive all the lines at Disney. :scared: The meds made all the difference. Life is much better now!!

PM me if you have questions - I'll be glad to talk more 'offline'. :goodvibes

Thanks for the info. Mom is actually in the hospital. She had some complictions. She has a stint in her ureter, and besides the having to pee all the time, she is passing clots. A nurse came out to the house and tried to flush it, but more clots kept coming.
The nurse was in contact w/ her urologist who told them to bring her to the er, and she will probably be there for a couple days.

Since mom is 3 hour away, i'm driving up tomarrow. I stopped by the store and picked some different things up. Thanks for suggesting the underpad things. May be really helpful in not having to do loads of sheets if an accident happens.

My mom is fine except for sneezing and laughing or late night accidents. I use on her bed a quilted bed pad that absorbs urine and protects the bed. Mom's matress is in a thick plastic cover. She used Depend undergarments which are a pantie and expensive.

I recommend the pads if it is small leakage like a sneeze. If it is flooding then go with the undergarments. My mother has no problem putting on the undergarments despite being unable to stand for a long time. I tried them one time and it was a lot nicer than I thought and not uncomfortable.

I also suggest pads as the underwear costs $1 each for mom and maybe 90 cents for regular sized. I am spending about $150 a month on them undies but she has not had any more bed sores and sleeps soundly.
