Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

One week from today I will either be bobbing around the pool at AKV or floating around the lazy river at TL thinking about when's the latest I can leave to make it over to the expo in time :).

I'm still sick (upper respiratory infection) and my running/training has really suffered :(. Now I'm just hoping to get around 2:30.

If anyone's looking for some last minute running shopping to get them in the mood Running Warehouse offers free 2-Day shipping (don't forget to use WISHD to get 15% off). I was in a bad mood a couple of days ago so I ordered another shirt and some running tights for the Fall/Winter :).

Thanks for the tip! I'm in a shopping mood.

FWIW, Mike called today to order our son's discounted ticket and asked the cast member to pass along the fact that we are pretty disppointed that there are no attractions open for the finish line party. Basically that we spent $70 so our son and his friend can walk around and spend more money on food. The cast member said they are still discussing having some attractions open, but that there will be entertainment around world showcase. Didn't know if it was worth a bunch of people calling or emailing in comments, or if it was just a hopeless cause.

I would be happy to do the same...it's not fair we are paying $40 to buy more stuff. Post the number and we should all barrage them!

Mike called 407 wdw irun

Part of me thinks it's pointless, but part of me feels like if enough people grumble who know what will happen. There might be a better number to call, but I kind of get the feeling the running stuff is separate from regular disney stuff. The other thing that bugged me, is that it is my understanding that DS won't even be able to see us finish or see us anywhere near the finish unless we spend more money. Oh well. I'm sure we will still have a fun time and DS is still looking forward to being at epcot for the "party."

I just called and got a very nice woman who was under the impression it was only going to be food and wine attractions that are open. That number basically just does reservations and ticket purchases. She suggested I call the endurance sports office on Monday and voice my concern. Their number is 407-938-3398 and their hours are 9-5. We are traveling with 2 WDW virgins so I was hoping they would get to enjoy some key EPCOT attractions during the after-party since their time is so limited. During TOT and EE, they always had several prime attractions up and running. What a disappointment if it's only going to be food stuff. I intend to call Monday and hope others will also. Even if we only get 2 or 3 key attractions open, it's still better than nothing.

Once again, I need some advice.

1. We are flying down on Thursday morning. Will it be okay to make our last run on Wednesday, or should we try to fit in a run on Friday too?

2. This is our very first race. Is there anything I need to know that might not be obvious to a new racer? I don't want to end up looking like a fool!

I am going to try to get in a light 15 min jog on Friday - just to keep the legs loose. I don't know when I'm doing this but maybe an evening spin around POFQ?

Good question! This is my first race as well and I'm afraid of making rookie mistakes as well.:eek:So let's hear the advice.

I already know that I have to slow down. I usually run on the treadmill, and I run way too fast outside. DH has a Garmin, so we know we have to be careful and keep track of our pace, so we have energy left at the end. I wish the watch would beep any time we went under a certain pace.:rotfl:

Hey! One week from now we will be on our way to the race!:cool1:

I think I'll be more excited tomorrow when I can say one week from today, I'll have accomplished the 1/2!:thumbsup2

I am very glad you wrote this.. I am running but was disappointed that there are no attractions open. I was wondering what the people who spent so much money for the after party of just one drink, one taste and no attractions would feel..
I then also will be calling tomorrow when they are open. It seems very unDisney to not have any attractions for the guests.

I think the after party sounds pretty lame as well. I really don't plan to stay late since i'm flying home sunday, but I hoped something would be open. I don't plan on going to Epcot this trip outside of the race.

I'm flying in the same time and I was planning on a run Thursday night. I'm hoping I don't get lost in my new surroundings though. I've never been to OKW before, and from the map it looks huge!
I would think you'd definitely want to rest on friday. I'm only running thursday so I don't get behind on my training for my first full 1/2 in November. I probably wouldn't run at all before the race at disney if I was running the entire 1/2 instead of the relay, but that's just me.

Things you need to know...........................

Rule 1: RELAX & HAVE FUN!!!!!!

Rule 2: Read Rule 1.

No matter what, you are NOT going to end up "looking like a fool". You're gonna' be out there with 12-14 THOUSAND like-minded people, many who are also doing their first 1/2. Just "stick to your plan" & have a great time.

BUT, be careful in the initial stages of the race of tripping over people's feet/legs/etc. These races are really crowded in the first few miles. Try to stay on asphalt. I've seen people take a dive on potholes when they go "off-roading".

But, unless you dress up like a 2 headed cowboy or something equally as silly, you are NOT going to look bad.

Just. Have. Fun. ;););););););););););););););););)

Oh no! I guess I'm going to have to pick out something different to wear! :rotfl:

Seriously though, thank you for the reassurance. I am always very self-conscious when I run and don't like anyone to even see me! It will be nice to be invisible in a crowd!

It really depends on how you feel. I will more than likely run the resort once we get in Friday or Saturday morning. Most likely I will run 3 miles or so just to shake things out. If your last run is Wednesday you will be OK.

For a new racer do the following.
Relax
Put your number on the FRONT
Relax
Remember to put you D-Tag on your shoe
Relax
Don't wait for the alst bus to the start
Relax
Make sure you bring your shoes - Carry on or wearing them on the flight
Relax
Tie your shoes in a double knot
Relax
Do not wear the race shirt from THIS race in the race - you have not earned it yet and it is considered bad form - We know you are a newbie if you do.
Relax
Head to the PortaPotties at least 30 minutes pre-entering of corrals
Relax
Do not wait to the last minute to load into the corrals
Relax
Do not stop for a walk break in the middle of the course until you glance to make sure you do not have a person tagging on your tail
Relax
Do not do anything new
Relax
Take a deep breath
Relax
AND HAVE FUN

Thanks for this!

I would personally love to thank the city of New York for the humid, disgusting weather that has acclimated me to Orlando already. I was so worried it would be fall here, and now, not so much.

4 pins or 2? I am never sure about this . . .

I'm not a total newbie, but I didn't know this! I would never do this because there are too many of the same shirts on course - but I learn something new every day!

Thanks, Coach! Hope I get to meet ya'!

I made my hubby turn on the air last night - it was too hot to sleep without it! Gross!

Do they give you pins to attach it with or do you need to bring your own?

Thanks for all the great advice. Also, thanks for mapping the run. Just worried about incline at around mile 10. It's not bad, I just know I'll be a little tired by then.
