Inaugural Disney Wine&Dine**1/2 Marathon** Post Race Discussion!

Congratulations momhmmx2. I think you will find that come race day you get a boost in pace. I still can't duplicate even my race pace for a 5K in training.

Well, good news on that half. My cold went away pretty much 100% when I woke up this morning and after the first mile I didn't feel any bad effects. Since the course was a point to point and almost all downhill to one extent or another I was hoping for a PR despite just getting over the cold and managed one, 1:27:17. It will be rough to better that at the W&D but maybe not being sick for the week leading up to it will make up for the lack of downhill roadway.

Hope everyone got their long runs in this weekend and they went well.

Wow Frank, way to go! :cool1: Doubt I'll see you @ the party- you'll be long gone by the time I get there..lol!:rolleyes1

So what are everyone's plans for race day? I'm thinking that it's going to be a good day for me to hit the expo, as we have a very fast trip (in at noon on Friday, out at noon on Monday), so I figure I can wander Food & Wine Friday when we get in, try to sleep late Saturday, get up, have a solid breakfast, head over to the expos, and not worry that it will be a bit crowded? I just want to make the best use of my few days in Disney!

Pre-race massage---an absolute must!

It is going to be a long day for me. I plan on getting up kind of early and spending the whole day in Epcot. I am using my GAD voucher that day so can only do one park and that will be it. I will go back to the resort to change and maybe take a short nap but most likely not. Then I plan on staying as late as I can at the party. I want to stay until it ends and don't have an early flight out the next day so I can sleep in.

No, I plan on staying pretty late so I'm sure I'll be there when the rest of the WISHers finish.

So glad your cold is gone! I'm walking and so will be very late getting in and plan on leaving imediately, so I won't see you....dang. We're staying offsite (unless waitlist miraculously comes through), so I plan to just head back as soon as I finish.

I will be up early, cheering on my family running the 5K. Then I will likely spend some time at the Magic Kingdom before heading to the race. Doubt I will take a nap. Hopefully I will take some time to sit back and people watch at MK, or at least try not to be on my feet all day. Kind of thinking the Dole Whip would make a good pre-race carb load.:goodvibes

Our plan is pretty much the same as Frank's. Rope drop at EPCOT, touring all day. I'll probably let my boyfriend sleep in, since we'll be at MNSSHP Friday night, and do rope drop myself, and let him walk over from BWI when he wakes up :)

Frank - Wow! Congrats on the PR! That's amazing! Especially since you were just sick.

I still haven't settled on my Saturday plans yet. I think I'll do the Expo for a little bit on Sat. And I know I'll spend some time relaxing by the pool. But we'll see. If I go in a park it'll probably be MGM (it'll always be MGM to me) or Epcot and won't be any longer than 2-3 hours. I'm really going to be nursing this injury just so I can get through the race.

i'm one half of two sets of relay halfer's that are staying at OKW. not sure yet on whether we are renting a car for the weekend. if not, best suggestions for transportation to the 2 different starting lines? :confused3

I'll be arriving in WDW early Thurs, so I think I'll hit the expo Friday and get it out of the way. So on Sat I'll probably sleep till around 8, and hit MK in the am. At Noon I'll head over to Epcot for my carb-loading lunch at Tutto. Epcot is my favorite park but I'm probably gonna spend all day Friday there, so after lunch I'll only hang around till 4ish. At 4 head to DHS, and spend a few hours there. Leave DHS around 6 or 7 and head back to the Beach Club. Relax maybe 20, 30 minutes, change into my running gear, and hop on the bus!

I think I'm gonna try to catch a 8:30 bus over to the WoS complex. Sound like a good time? Or is that too early? I've done a handful of Disney races but I always forget. Is being at the race area an hour ahead of time the norm?

Wow! Everyone has been doing so well with their training!

Frank-great job on the time! Even sick you'd still leave most of us in your dust.

ahoff - :rotfl: I think I'm in the 2:30 corral (or at least that's the time I put on my entry) but I think I'll be able to do it in about 2:15. And I've worked out a double layer of compression shorts if I go that route ;).

My plan so far for Saturday is...I have no idea. I could go to a park but I'm honestly thinking of just sleeping in and hanging out at the pool, reading, and taking naps. Very exciting, I know. I thought about going to a water park and just relaxing but with it being Saturday it'll probably be super crowded. I may go to a park as I am getting a 3 day pass and know I'm going to parks on Sunday and Monday, just haven't figured out the other day yet. I also don't know where I'm eating but I'm leaning towards a late breakfast at Boardwalk Bakery for a yummy egg and cheese croissant .

My long run didn't happen this past weekend as I felt sick and I had plans with a friend all day on both Saturday and Sunday. I feel a little better now so I'll be running tonight.

I really want to buy a Sweaty Band before the race but I think I'll be able to save myself on the shipping if I wait until the expo and just find something there (it's no big deal if I don't though).

Can't wait for the race and to meet people at the meet and/or race! :goodvibes Thanks so much Mrs. D for getting all of this together!!

While I'm still anxiously awaiting the race instructions and post race party map, I did notice that disney has a lot more information posted about transportation on their website. Some of this does not mesh with the plans you all are posting, so make sure you read it and double check!

I think my 10k on Saturday totally killed my training this week (or at least the beginning on the week!) It was mostly on a trail, and I didn't even think about how that would be different for my body since i'm used to streets, but i've been so sore in my calves the last few days. I'm hoping to try and get a run in tomorrow, but would have liked to be running last night or tonight instead. Has anyone ever experienced this before? I was looking at a trail half around thanksgiving, but am thinking i'll skip it now and do a 5K instead.

Leave the worrying about transportation to Disney. Take the Disney resort bus to Epcot as a team and then take Race transportation to the race. You will need to wait for race day instructions for how to get to the relay point. You will not be able to drive to that point. See below

Saw that this AM. Hopefully we are about to get the instructions.

Yes, trail running is a lot tougher on the lower leg; but in a good way. You are recruiting the stabilizer muscle differently and actually working to improve you injury resistance. You cannot simply move from a street to a trail, especially a rough trail. It can tax you at a rate of 10-20% higher than a comparible run on a flat surface.

Hello and congrats to everyone on doing so well with their training! I did a training run of 13.1 miles last Friday. Not my best time but I'm glad I did it. Starting to taper this week.

stitchfan18--I think it is harder to run on trails/gravel roads than on pavement. My runs are primarily on gravel roads but do some on asphalt.

As far as our plans...on Friday, my DD, who is also running the half, myself, and my DH are planning to spend most of the day in Epcot. We have dinner reservations at Tutto Italia at 8:30 that evening. On Saturday morning, we are going over to the WWOS to pick up our race packets and look around the expo. Will spend the rest of the day at Stormalong Bay at the Beach Club. Guess we'll plan on heading to the start about 7:30. Sure don't want to miss the last bus.

DH is trying to decide if he should come to watch us at the start or watch us at the end near the Beach Club. What are your friends/family that are cheering you on going to do?

I'm sorry I won't be able to make it to any of the meets but want to spend our time with DD, who now lives in Idaho, and my nephew, who will be driving down from Gainesville, Fl and going to MNSSHP with us on Sunday.

The trail vs. street running is great info. I suppose the same would apply for trail vs. treadmill running? or at least somewhat similar? I run on a dirt trail often. It's not really intense as trails go, in fact it's relatively flat & packed, though there's one fairly decent hill & some sandy spots. I typically run it in Vibrams. Am I increasing my injury resistance by doing this? Might I be a bit faster on a street run as a result? Here's to hoping...

I think my DW is waiting for the post-race party then heading in then. I am trying to talk her into seeing the start. Her words were along the line of I may see you but not likely in the corwd.

Flat and packed is more about cushioning than the irregular and or gravelly surfaced trail. Obviously it’s footing is a little less predictable than a concrete road, so you are seeing some benefit.

I'm glad to hear the soreness is typical with trail running. The course was probably 4 miles trail, the other 2 miles on the road. The trail was pretty rough with lots of dips and obstacles. It actually rained really hard the night before, and part of it was flooded and muddy, and there were lots of branches on the course. The 5k runners were probably wondering where we went because all the 10k runners came back with mud splattered legs:rotfl:

Since i'm thinking about it now. Does anyone know if there are any hills to contend with on this course? I never take notice while we are there. I know it can't compare to the "land of rolling hills" where I live, but I can't imagine its completely flat. Anyone know?

You are using your muscles differently on a treadmill then you are on the street. On a treadmill you are moving your legs to keep up with a belt while on the street you are using your legs to propel you forward.

I really have no idea about the Vibrams though so can't speak to those. I can tell you that when I run in my racing shoes I am about 30 seconds faster then when I run the same distance in my normal training shoes and this is mostly down to the lower weight. I also suspect that the more direct route to the ground via less cushioning is also a more efficient way to get the power from my legs through my shoes into the ground.

SPECTATORS

Where are spectators allowed to watch the Half Marathon and Relay? Spectators will be allowed to view the start and finish of the Half Marathon and Relay. No viewing locations are available on the course or at the Relay Exchange zone.

This is from the FAQ portion of the website...so there is no one to cheer us on other than our fellow runners?! Let's be real supportive of one another out on that course!

Definitely. A "good job" goes a long way.
