In what grade is your child too old.....

When DS was going into 2nd grade he wanted a rolling backpack. I noticed none of his classmates had characters anymore so I bought him a Jansport. Best purchase I did because he is going into 3rd grade and the backpack is still excellent looking.

I think it depends on what the other kids in his/her school are doing. There are kids who want to do what "everyone else is doing" and then there are the ones who do what they want and don't care what other people think. It takes guts (or a unique sense of humor) to be the latter. I would say most kids just want to blend in though.
Very true! Characters were out by 1st grade, 2nd at the latest -- not cool on the bus, which is full of 5th and 6th graders. Now character notebooks seem O.K.

I carried a TInk in HS. I was one of those who cares kinda gals! i thought it was cute, so i used it! matching lunch box of course ;)

I was the quirky cheerleader with too much energy :teeth:

We too have banned Bratz items in our house. I am so glad we are not the only ones.

NO Bratz items allowed in this house either!
Not only won't my daughter that is in 2nd grade carry a character back pack she won't use a back pack at all. Only the 1st and 2nd grade kids use backpacks, the "big " kids use messenger bags!

You're not the only ones. Us, too.

We do every other year for purchasing, too. So, my dd3rd has never liked characters, but didn't mind carrying the princess lunchbox last year--no way this year. Her backback has always been variations of pink/black.
DD1st loves all characters and wanted them on everything. When her backpack got a hole in it though, I made her get one that was plain since I wanted her to use it 2 years. Both girls opted for floral lunchboxes from Gap this year. Anything that shows--plain, Anything in the backpack, characters are OK, according to DD2nd (now). DSpre-k has superman on EVERYTHING!!

My dd-1st grade got a Bratz rolling backpack

My dd- preschool got a Dora backpack

My dss stopped using the character backpacks after 2nd grade.

I think second grade is the max, by third grade there is more peer pressure on the kids.

When your child is no longer comfortable carrying one.

Just take a trip into your local Hot Topic store to see that there are plenty of teenagers who buy shirts and bags with the likes of Hello Kitty and Strawberry Shortcake and other characters. Heck - look how many of US have Disney character shirts and such! LOL!

This is an issue here, as my 5th grader went through issues with this back in 2nd grade. Not a backpack - but her folders, notebooks, etc. She has always loved Pooh Bear, but became embarassed to let anyone know that because many kids thought it was "babyish." I didn't push her, but I continued to reassure her that it's OK to like Winnie the Pooh and if she keeps her eyes and ears open, she will discover that other kids her age still enjoy it right along with her.

She slowly discovered other kids who had "babyish" items or admitted to liking Pooh. Now in 5th grade, she proudly picked out Pooh-related folders for this year.

ITA.

whenever they're not comfortable carrying one, they'll stop.

Yep, I agree with others, for most kids they ditch the characters by 2nd grade.

second grade...no character anything, velcro shoes, and wal-mart shirts....it's nike, addidas, under armour....blah , blah, blah.... :teeth:
